Lyndon wins Lyon County League Volleyball title; Hartford Volleyball goes 3-3 over last 6 matches

The Lyndon volleyball team went 6-0 last weekend, winning the Lyon County League Tournament played in Emporia.
The Lady Tigers started with a 25-15, 25-15 victory over Flinthills. Chelsea Schmitz led the team with 11 kills, while Stephanie Goetz added eight.
In Match Two, Lyndon took down Marais des Cygnes Valley in two games. Goetz had eight kills, and Cara Bolz added 12 digs.
Against Madison, Lyndon took a 26-24, 25-10 victory. Krista Banzhaf and Goetz both contributed a pair of solo blocks.
In the Lady Tigers’ 25-21, 25-19 win over Lebo, Goetz had a team-high seven kills, and Lindsay Wigger paced the team with 11 assists.
Lyndon had its first and only three-game match in the semifinals, defeating Waverly 25-18, 19-25, 25-22. Goetz posted 20 kills, while Banzhaf had 24 assists.
The Lady Tigers completed their championship run with a 25-16, 25-23 victory over Olpe. Goetz had 14 kills, and Bolz added 20 digs.
Hartford volleyball team splits 6 matches over last week
The Hartford volleyball team went 3-3 in its matches over the past week, going 2-2 in the Lyon County League Tournament and 1-1 at Regionals.
The Lady Jaguars defeated Burlingame, Chase County and Madison and lost to Olpe once and Waverly twice.
Hartford started off the LCL Tournament with a two-game victory over Burlingame. The Lady Jags had eight aces in all, with Amy Bolen, Amber Schmidt and Jessica Wilson all contributing two each.
Kim Darbro led the team with three kills, while Kellie Farr added six blocks.
In the next match, Hartford battled to an 18-18 tie in Game One before losing the game and match to Olpe. Bolen had a team-high six kills.
After winning the first game, Hartford couldn’t hold on against Waverly, losing its next match in three games. Bolen had 11 kills, while Farr notched seven blocks.
Hartford finished tournament pool play with a 25-18, 25-12 triumph over Chase County. Bolen and Darbro both had two kills.
On Tuesday, Hartford opened Regionals with a 25-13, 25-16 victory over Madison. Farr had nine kills and a .692 hitting efficiency.
The Lady Jags had nine aces, led by Bolen and Darbro, who had three apiece.
Hartford finished its day with a 25-14, 25-19 loss to second-seeded Waverly. Bolen had five kills, while Christina Lee posted a team-high seven blocks.
The Lady Jaguars finished the regular season with a 16-13 record.
EMS 7th-graders end season with win
The Emporia Middle School 7th-grade football team ended its season on a high note, beating Shawnee Heights, 12-6, last week.
Heights started the scoring on a 20-yard reverse to make it 6-0, but EMS responded.
The Vikings had two second-quarter fumbles deep in Heights’ territory, but the defense made the best of the situation, twice tackling Heights runners in the end zone for a pair of safeties.
At the half, Heights led 6-4.
In the third quarter, EMS’s Dylan Jackson was able to capitalize on a long drive when he scored a 10-yard TD. He also ran in the two-point conversion to give the Vikings a 12-6 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Vikings defense held for the remainder of the game.
Jackson led EMS with 17 carries for 90 yards.
Defensively, middle linebacker Jackson Perez had seven tackles, a sack, forced fumble and safety. R.J. Kuhn added five tackles.
The Vikings ended the year with a 1-2 record.
In the B Game, Emporia lost 8-6 as a late touchdown and two-point conversion sealed the victory for Shawnee Heights.
J.L. Savage had EMS’s lone touchdown — a 20-yard run in the third quarter.
