A free workshop this week in Emporia should answer questions for anyone concerned about domestic violence, organizers say.
“We’ll be talking about how to respond to children who have witnessed domestic violence,” said Lori Moore of SOS about some of the information scheduled to be presented. “That’s important to anyone who comes in contact with children, such as churches and schools.”
The first day of the conference is a full day, running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Potter-Beath Activity Center, 2921 W. 24th Ave. Lunch will be included. It will feature Lt. Mark Wynn, a 20-year veteran of the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department and a survivor of domestic violence. Featured in Friday’s session, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon, will be Jacqie Spradling, assistant Kansas attorney general and leader of that office’s domestic violence unit.
Topics planned for the workshop include assisting victims from the initial emergency call through the court process, stalking and counter-stalking.
The workshop is sponsored by SOS, the Emporia Police Department, Lyon County Attorney’s Office, Lyon County Sheriff’s Department and the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence. There is no charge to attend the workshop for anyone living in the five counties served by SOS — Chase, Coffey, Greenwood, Lyon, Morris and Osage. For people living outside those areas, the workshop costs $25.
Registrations must be made by noon Wednesday. To register, call SOS at 343-8799.
