One person was rescued from an apartment house fire this morning in central Emporia.
Firefighters were called at 8:20 a.m. to the fire at 906 Market St. by a resident of a downstairs apartment. When they arrived, they discovered a person trapped on the top floor. The person, who has not been identified, was conscious when evacuated and taken to the hospital.
The fire, which started on in an upstairs apartment, remains under investigation. The building sustained smoke and water damage.

A sad situation that could have had worse results...landlord, renter or just one of those things that happen? Who is to blame?

Interesting -- "trapped on the top floor." Only one way out? I wonder what the city ordinance is on that one?

Well, befor you people start slinging accusations, pointing fingers and trying to decide who's gonna get sued for this or who was at fault. How about a Job Well Done, by the Emporia Fire Dept.
Jeeez.. the smoke hasn't even cleared yet!

KVOE, EPD, EFD and the Gazette do a wonderful job, ready to roll at a moments' notice. Many times they do NOT get off when their shift is done, it's when the work is done. I personally saw them in action last month, been there, done did that. I personally I was impressed with Lyle Armitage and his crew. The situation could have been much worse.
Emporians should be proud we have such resources. I sincerely hope the damage was minimal, since a resident made the call. Ironically I drove down 9th this morning, never even smelled smoke. I mentioned landlord/tenant issues because that has been the buzz word lately in our fair city.

emporia fire dept is great, they put our a fire at our apt building a few years back and i watched them "attack" another fire last year, they are wonderful. i hope whoever was trapped will be okay. keeping and escape ladder for second story apartments is cheap and practical, they are made of rope and i think plastic and they can be kept beside a window and then be hung from the window sill if you need to climb out.way to go EFD !!
