Start the week with a flu shot, then get ready to celebrate Emporia State University’s Homecoming. There will be plenty to do in Emporia this week.
• Newman Regional Health will have a drive-through flu vaccination clinic from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the south parking lot off Elm Street. Wear short sleeves and bring $20 for each shot, unless you are on Medicaid or Medicare Part B.
• The Emporia City Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the city commission room at the Civic Building. The commissioners plan to receive a grant for the zoo from U.S. Cellular, approve the final Planned Unit Development for Ashley Estates II and declare next week “Older Workers Week in Emporia.”
• The Emporia Farmers Market will continue to offer the bounty of the harvest season when it opens at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street.
• ESU’s Homecoming show, “Little Shop of Horrors,” opens its run at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Albert Taylor Hall. Call 341-6378 for reservations.
• SOS will be host for the fifth domestic violence summit Thursday and Friday at the Potter-Beath Activity Center.
• The Main Street Fall Festival, sponsored by Emporia Main Street, will begin at 7 p.m. Friday in the parking lot at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street with activities for the whole family.
• At 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Emma Chase Cafe in Cottonwood Falls will feature “K-177 Bluegrass Pickin’.”
• It will be spooky Friday and Saturday nights at Camp Alexander and Neosho Rapids. Camp Alexander’s Haunted Forest will run from 8 p.m. to midnight each night. Call 342-1386 for information. The Neosho Rapids Haunted House, sponsored by the Neosho Rapids Lions Club, will run from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Neosho Rapids Community Center.
• ESU Homecoming parade and football game are scheduled for Saturday. The downtown parade will begin at 10 a.m. The game will begin in Welch Stadium at 1 p.m.
• Saturday is also the day for the Prairie Harvest Festival and Barn Dance at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, north of Strong City on Kansas Highway 177. Information: (620) 273-8494.
