The North Lyon County junior high football team won the Flint Hills Junior League crown Thursday night with a 24-21 win over the Osage City Indians.
North Lyon County drew first blood by capping its opening 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 4-yard run by Cody Murray. The two-point conversion was successful with a 3-yard run by Murray.
Osage City came right back, scoring on its initial drive on a 65-yard run by Sultan Cousin. The PAT was no good, leaving NLC ahead by two. Osage City scored twice more in the first half and converted both a PAT and two-point conversion to end the half with 21 points.
NLC, meanwhile, scored once more in the first half on a 34-yard run by Murray. After making another two-point conversion, MLC went into the locker room down by five, 21-16.
The second half opened with strong defensive play by both teams, but NLC managed to score on a 15-play, 80-yard drive. Murray once again took the ball into the end zone on a 7-yard run with 48 seconds left in the game. With only a three-point lead, the NLC defense dug in to contain the Indians, stopping them on a fourth down try with 2 seconds left.
The Indians, who entered the game undefeated, finished the season 6-1 and took second place in the league. NLC also finished 6-1, with the lone loss to Chase County in the second game of the season.
The remainder of the Flint Hills Junior League ended in this order: Council Grove, 5-2, third; Chase County, 5-2, fourth; Lyndon, 3-4, fifth; West Franklin, 2-5, sixth; Mission Valley, 1-6, seventh; and Herington, 0-7, eighth.
