Optimists
The 2007-08 officers of the Flint Hills Optimist Club are Bob Burenheide, president; Steve Graham and Rich Jaggard, vice presidents; George Durler, secretary-treasurer; Rick Buck, editor of the club newsletter. Members of the board of directors for 2007-08 are Bob Glover, Mary Helmer, Darrell Jones, Brian DeWitt, Steve Younger, Joe Michaels and Brett Stewart. The club recently made a monetary donation to the “Read To Your Bunny” infant literacy program.
Sertoma
Officers of the Sertoma Club of Emporia for 2007-08 are John Newland, president; Steve Trebilcock, president-elect; Elton Jensen, secretary; Rod Symmonds, treasurer; Jerry McCalla Elton, sergeant-at-arms; Les Nuessen, chairman of the board; Ron Dinkel, newsletter editor. Members of the board of directors are Jerry McCalla, Elton Jensen, Kerry Wallace, one year; Bob Hush, Ron Dinkel, Charles Wilhite, two years; Jim Stolfus, Perry Ott, Glenn Boyce, three years. The club voted recently to finance a third scholarship for the 2007-08 school year at the Flint Hills Technical College. Each year the club sponsors two $500 awards but expanded the selection this year “because of three outstanding applicants,” according to the newsletter. The newest Sertomans are Travis Hitt and Leo Burenheide.
Alpha Delta Kappa
Alpha Delta Kappa teachers’ sorority is celebrating the 60th year of its founding by four women educators. The month of October has been designated as Founder’s Day and is being celebrated today by members of the Emporia chapters, Alpha Sigma and Alpha Zeta. The group will have dinner this evening at the Miracle Café in Reading. Joyce Perkins, president of Kansas Alpha Delta Kappa, will be in charge of the program.
Santa Fe Trail GOP women
Virginia Graham, president of the Santa Fe Trail Republican Women of North Lyon County and Alberta Brinkman of Emporia, National Protocol Chairman, attended the National Federation of Republican Women 34th biennial convention held Sept. 27-30 at Palm Springs, Calif. More than 1800 members and guests were in attendance. The featured speaker was Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York. Graham and Brinkman participated in leadership training seminars, campaign management schools and political and policy workshops.
