Jeff Shirley, Jim Marsh, Larry Edmiston and Jena Johnson were recently appointed to the Americus City Council. David Huddstun was elected council president and Larry Peres is the mayor.

Sesquicentennial book

The book book celebrating the city’s 150th anniversary will be published in May 2008 and will be available at the Americus Alumni Association meeting which is held on the last Saturday of that month.

The committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. today in the Presbyterian Annex on Broadway. Everyone is welcome to attend and questions about the book will be answered.    Breakfast with the Masons

I'd hope the council will revisit the gas company problem soon.My payments aren't even credited to my bill.Late fees are 10% a month.
The concrete pad for the propane tank is done at my house.I have the 1" pipe and fittings.Conversion kits are on the way.The propane truck will be here next week.My new pellet stove is in the basement.I talked to 2 people today that rent.No way will they be here this winter. Many houses are for sale-bet there will be more.In between Americus Energy LLC and the hi-dollar telephone company,it's a good way to get rid of poor and fixed income people. Not to mention any businesses. When will we be required to bring a daily bucket of coal to heat the school?

I have friends who live in Americus and have complained for years about the gas bills and phone company yet nothing gets done. This is what happens when there is no competition. Sounds like Lyon County needs to look into this. Uh oh, more government? Well, can you see why?

That's terrible. And here we go into another winter. Here's the thing, those high dollar subdivisions keep moving toward the northwest. What happens about phone and gas when they start reaching Americus city limits? I can't understand why Kansas Gas doesn't buy that now. Maybe they don't want to replace current equipment. Shouldn't the KCC step in? Good luck to you.

The KCC is looking at it,but they will allow-No,they INSIST working people,disabled/retired people to be raped for a couple of years first.Gut the town and get'em out.Who wants all "those" people standing in the way of 300,000 dollar houses? You can buy a city block in Americus for little-to-nothing now.I saw 6 empty, decent houses for sale on a 4 block drive through town. The county taxes a $24,000 house(actual selling price) at $62,000.Maybe the McMansions will stop at the Neosho river.Who would buy here now knowing phone and gas combined will run $140/mo in the summer, and $500+/mo in the winter? ...... I do like rant a bit!

Emporia will go on West before they would cross the flood plain area South of Americus. I'm surprised you are being allowed propane within the city limits, I hope all of your propane appliances are above grade or you will be violating the building codes. I left Americus when they began allowing double wide trailer houses to be set in any residential neighborhood(Take a look at how many of those pieces of junk are abandoned there today with weeds growing up around them or have junk vehicles and trash around them already). I felt the phone company was and is a major upgrade to what was there before. Last I counted, there were 24 house for sale in Americus.

neighbor-I think you're right about Emporia mainly going West.Once you get to the river, everything changes.Propane is allowed.I know people in Emporia fully on propane- not a big deal.Up here,my appliances are 92%+,and under 2 years old.The gas bill is higher than before.Phone company is a holding company on the East coast. The local office and service people are gone. It's a week mailing time for the bill.No local place to pay.Long distance to Emporia is 19 cents/min.Sure like it here, but it seems we're really getting worked over!

Propane is allowed, only if the appliances are not below grade such as in a basement according to the Building Codes. Funny, the residents thought they were getting fleeced by Yeager, sometimes you get more than you want when you complain.
