Students enjoy magical field trip day

Saturday, October 13, 2007

Seatbelts, everyone! Kids in Reading School had a chance to climb aboard the world’s one and only magical yellow school bus, famous for taking kids on some of their favorite field trips ever. This was only the beginning of their magical field trip day.

Students at Reading School began their theme day by visiting the bus and interacting with ocean life, the weather, the solar system, volcanoes, and the human body. And what would the bus be without the irrepressible Ms. Frizzle, teacher and driver extraordinaire who also made a guest appearance.

The day continued with groups of students in kindergarten through eighth grade taking a magical day of field trips within their building. The students visited the ocean floor learning about sharks, whales, and other ocean life. They practiced math skills with ocean experiments.

The trip continued inside the human body with students creating their own body drawing with cut out organs attached.

Students flew into outer space and got lost in the cosmos creating their own solar system of planets with string and foil. Students not only learned about the solar system but studied measuring as well.

Then they journeyed to the middle of the Earth and studied the inside of the earth. They each created their own mini volcanoes and constructed individual dioramas. They completed this journey with a snack of ice cream, pudding and crushed oreos representing the earth’s core, mantle and crust.

Other activities through the day consisted of reading Magic School Bus books and creating a school bus frame for students to take pictures of the memorable day with Ms. Frizzle on the bus home.
