Artist reception

The Emporia Arts Council will have an artist reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Arts Center, 618 Mechanic St., for Alex Hawley, who has an exhibit, “Kansas in Black and White.”

Recital

The ESU Department of Music presents a faculty recital, Flint Hills Trio, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Heath Recital Hall of Beach Music Hall. General admission is $5; $4 for students and senior citizens. Information: 341-5431.

Band performance

The Emporia High School marching band will participate in the annual Capital City Marching Band Festival at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at Yager Stadium at Moore Bowl at Washburn University. Gates open at 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students. Children under the age of six years will be admitted free. Bands will be evaluated and presented awards based on musical performance, entertainment value and marching and maneuvering. Other bands participating are from Leavenworth High School, Mission Valley High School and Topeka high schools, Highland Park High, Seaman High, Shawnee Heights High, Topeka West High and Washburn Rural High. Eppink exhibit

“New Directions,” an art exhibit by Robin Cole and Anthony Henderson, will go on display at the Eppink Gallery Monday. Cole and Henderson were displaced from their home by Hurricane Katrina and came to Emporia as “artists in residence” in October 2006, staying for a month and working in the Kress Building. The show presents some of the directions that began during their residency, displaying paintings, drawings and sculpture. The show will run through Nov. 30.

The Senior Exhibitions in the Gilson Gallery features works by Travis Ramos and Jake Jones, shown through Oct. 12. Scott Lockyear will have the next Senior Exhibit, opening Oct. 15 and shown through Oct. 26. Information: 341-5246.

‘Little Shop of Horrors’

The ESU 35th annual homecoming scholarship musical will be “Little Shop of Horrors” with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and book by Howard Ashman. According to the press release, this show was “one of the longest-running off-Broadway shows of all time”; an “affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies...” Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 through Oct. 20 and 2 p.m. Oct. 21 in Albert Taylor Hall at Plumb Hall. Ticket prices are $15 for orchestra seating and $12 for balcony level seating. Balcony seats are available to ESU students for $8. All seats reserved in Albert Taylor Hall; call the box office at 341-6378.
