Lyon County
Showdown 2007
The Lyon County Fairboard will be hosting contestants from all over the state of Kansas for the Lyon County Showdown 2007 on Oct. 20-21 at the Lyon County Fairgrounds.
There will be high school contestants competing in bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback riding, team roping, calf roping, steer wrestling, pole bending, barrel racing, goat tying, breakaway roping and cutting horse contests.
Junior high contestants will be competing in goat tying, pole bending, team roping, chute dogging, ribbon roping, bull riding and barrel racing.
Local contestants will be competing from Emporia High, North and South Lyon County Schools, along with contestants from Morris, Coffey, Osage, Greenwood and Chase counties.
The rodeo will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Emporia Kids
Wrestling Clinic
Emporia Kids Wrestling will be holding its 2007 Wrestling Clinic from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13 and Wednesday Nov. 14. The camp is open to any child 4 to 13 years of age.
The camp is an introductory clinic for kids that are interested in wrestling. There is no cost, and participants are asked to wear shorts and a T-shirt.
There also will be an instructional clinic for parents at the same time as the kids’ clinic.

MAYB Winter and Spring Tournaments
Mid-America Youth Basketball recently announced it 2007-08 winter and spring basketball schedule, which can be viewed at www.mayb.com.
MAYB will accept registrations from now through the winter tournament season. Teams are eligible for a four-tournament package if registration is received by Nov. 15. Tournaments are scheduled in Kansas and 10 other surrounding states.

Furharvester
Education Class
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and the Kansas Fur Harvesters Association will sponsor a Furharvester Education Class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21. There will be no charge for the class.
Those interested should meet at the American Legion Hall in Olpe at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 for registration. Please bring a sack lunch Saturday.
Adults are welcome and encouraged to attend with students. A minimum age of 11 is preferred. Topics will include modern trapping techniques for raccoon, bobcat, coyote, beaver and other furbearers, furbearer hunting, fur handling, ethics and laws and regulations. Saturday’s class will include a classroom session followed by a field session. Sunday will include a brief classroom session and review followed by testing.

Spartan Basketball
All boys third through eighth grade that are interested in playing for the Junior Spartan youth basketball team this winter should contact coach Rick Bloomquist before Nov. 5.
All boys are welcome to play. No one will be turned away.
