Taco dinner

The Fifth annual Homemade Pan-Fried Taco Dinner and Sale will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Didde Catholic Center, 1415 Merchant St. The dinner, dine-in or carry out, includes chips, Mexican rice, Frijoles Charros (pinto beans, ham, Mexican sausage, bacon, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, peppers) dessert and beverage. There also will be homemade baked foods. The cost for the dinner is $6; $4 for children 11 and younger. Tacos are $1.75 each; $9 for six; and $18 for 12. The event is presented by the Emporia Brown Express Athletic Club, Didde Catholic Campus Center, ESU Students and ESU Karate Club; sponsors are Navrat’s Office Products, Wal-Mart, Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home and Reeble’s Country Mart/Price Chopper. Proceeds will support the Didde Catholic Campus Center ESU students. For more information, call 343-6765.

Optimist & Chris Cakes pancakes

The Flint Hills Optimist Club fifth annual FHOC/Chris Cakes Pancake Feed will be held from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the National Guard Armory, 1809 Merchant St. Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased from members or at the door. Proceeds will be used for the club’s many community projects.

Allen Octoberfeast

The second annual North Lyon County Youth Association Octoberfeast will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the renovated Allen Grade School in Allen. The menu includes Bad Ol’ Bern’s barbecue, baked potatoes, green beans and corn, rolls, dessert and beverage. Music will be played by local disc jockey Josh Reece. Donations will be accepted.

Dunlap Country Dinner

The Dunlap United Methodist Women will serve the annual roast beef “country” dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the church fellowship hall. Foods include roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, gelatin salad, French bread, homemade pie, tea or coffee. There also will be a Country Store with baked items, crafts and miscellaneous items. Donations for the meal will be used for UMW projects.

Reading church FallFest will be Saturday

The Reading United Methodist Church will have the FallFest at 6 p.m. Saturday. The meal includes traditional and sloppy-joe-style bierocks, bratwursts, salads, apple desserts, ice cream and cider. After the meal, there will be a raffle for the hand-stitched UMW quilt.

Tootsie Roll Drive

The annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive will be held Saturday and Sunday at various locations around Emporia. K of C councils throughout the state also will participate in the event that weekend. The Knights will hand out Tootsie Rolls and accept donations. The funds collected are distributed to programs that serve people with intellectual disabilities.

Eighty percent of the proceeds collected in the Emporia drive will be distributed directly to local organizations, a news release stated. The remaining 20 percent of the funds go to financing the Kansas Special Olympics state basketball tournament and cheerleader clinic, held at Fort Hays State University.

Spaghetti at Allen

American Legion Post 389 in Allen will have a Spaghetti Supper from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Post home in Allen. The cost is $5.50 a plate for spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert, coffee, tea and water. For more information, call Herb Parks at (620) 528-3281.

Indian Taco Feed

The Emporia First Church of the Nazarene will have an Indian Taco Feed from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Potter-Beath Activity Center, just north of Wal-Mart. Tickets are $4.50 for adults and $3 for children 10 and younger. The price includes one Indian taco, one dessert and a beverage. Carryout will be available. To purchase tickets or for more information, call the church office at 342-2858. Proceeds will go to the church fund for children’s ministries.
