The Emporia Middle School Vikings “A” team got things rolling early Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Junction City Wildcats, 32-6, to improve to 4-2 this season.
Emporia scored on its fifth play from scrimmage on an Austin Knight touchdown — his eighth of the season. Later in the first half, EMS added six points on a 22-yard Tim Eichler bootleg that fooled the defense and allowed Eichler to score untouched.
Right before halftime, Derek Gifford found the end zone to make the score 20-0.
Following the break, the Vikings completed a near-perfect second half. Not only did the defense hold the Wildcats to zero total yards, the offense added a touchdown pass to Collin Thomsen and another Gifford TD before allowing Junction City to score on the following kickoff return at the end the game.
Leading the Vikings on defense were Thomsen with five tackles, Derek Hartig and Gifford each had four tackles and Dylan Samuels finished the game with three tackles, one quarterback sack and three blocked punts.
The Vikings wrap up their season next Tuesday with a home game against Washburn Rural.
Meanwhile, the EMS “B” team bettered its record to 7-1 with a victory over the Junction City, 14-0.
The “B” team has not lost a game since the home opener back in September.
This time, the Vikings found new weapons: Cody Dix and Devin Walburn. Dix, who normally plays fullback, entered the game at tailback after Chris Alderman went out with an injury. Walburn took the role of fullback, the position normally played by Dix.
Dix ended the game with 96 yards on 12 carries and Walburn powered his way to 31 yards on six carries and a touchdown. Quarterback Brittain Moore ran for a touchdown and connected on 3 of 6 passes.
