Antonio's late goal leads EHS soccer team to win over Carroll

Wednesday, October 10, 2007

Carlos Antonio finally broke through with five minutes left in the game, scoring the game-winning goal as the Emporia High soccer team took down Bishop Carroll, 1-0, Tuesday in Wichita.

Antonio’s goal was the end result of a strong effort by Adrian Trujillo, who took it down the sideline and sent in a near-perfect cross. Antonio was there for the tap-in to break the scoreless tie.

The match was a defensive struggle mostly because of Carroll’s style of play. The team essentially put 10 players back on defense, using a 2-1-2 formation in the box and also putting four more players around the top of the box.

The Spartans used only two forwards, making it that much tougher to score.

“I’ve never seen defense like that, but it was very effective,” EHS coach Steve Pearson said. “It’s hard to get through 10 guys to even get a shot on goal.”

EHS changed up its style of play in the second half, becoming more aggressive offensively without much fear that Carroll would score.

The Spartans outshot Carroll, 13-4, and had six corner kicks to Carroll’s none.

EHS (10-3) will play host to Shawnee Heights on Thursday.
