Lyon County Republican Women to meet
The Lyon County Republican Women will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at The American Legion, 2921 W. 12th Ave. The program will be presented by Randy Rice on his experiences in Iraq.
The organization is sending boxes to U.S. troops overseas.
NBC Show stars
Four women from Hartford were on the NBC Today Show on Monday. They were celebrating their 50th birthdays in New York. All were wearing black T-shirts emblazoned with large white “5-0” numerals. Cindy Edwards Baldwin was the spokesperson for the group.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
In recognition of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, SOS will have the fifth domestic violence summit on Oct 18 and 19. Featured speakers will be Lt. Mark Wynn, a national trainer to police executives, patrol officers, training officers, prosecutors, judges, legislators, social service providers, health-care professionals and victim advocates; and Kansas Assistant Attorney General Jacqie Spradling, leader of the Kansas Attorney General’s Domestic Violence Unit.
The event will be held at the Potter-Beath Activity Center, west of Wal-Mart. On Oct. 18, activities will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Lt. Wynn as trainer and speaker. Spradling will be the speaker on Oct. 19; activities will be from 9 a.m. to noon.
Celebrating 90 years
Naomi A. Rose, longtime resident of Emporia, is celebrating her 90th birthday anniversary today. She will be the guest of honor at a reception from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church.
Hostesses will be her daughters, Susan Rose of Kansas City, Mo., Sally Johnson of Austin and Sherry Trommer of Georgetown, Texas, and their families.
The family requests a card shower for her, with cards to be sent to Holiday Resort, 2700 W. 30th Ave., No. 214, Emporia, KS 66801, where she moved this year.
Rose, who graduated from Emporia High School and Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, taught in the Admire and Allen areas during the early years of World War II. After her marriage to Ralph Rose, she became an associate of Rose’s Grocery on West Ninth Avenue until it closed in 1982.
William Allen White to speak
“An Evening with William Allen White, Sage of Emporia,” as portrayed by Fred Krebs, will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Kanza Room of the ESU Memorial Union. The free program is presented by the Kansas Humanities Council “History Alive.” Sponsors are the American Association of University Women-Emporia Branch and the Emporia State University Department of Speech.
