Art, music, football and flu shots highlight a week of activities ahead for area residents.
- Artists-in-residence Robin Cole and Anthony Henderson will open an exhibit today that will run through Nov. 30. Cole and Henderson came to Emporia State University after they were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Their show will be in the Eppink Art Gallery at ESU.
- The annual Prairie Art-Plein Air event in Chase County will run through Saturday. More information may be had by calling the Chase County Chamber of Commerce, 620-273-8469.
- Senior Exhibits by Travis Ramos and Jake Jones will continue through Friday in the Gilson Gallery on ESU campus.
- “The Magic School Bus” will make appearances on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon and from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Emporia Public Library. The event is free and open to the public. Call 340-6462 for more information.
- Kate Bergman, flutist, will present a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in heath Recital Hall in Beach Music Hall at ESU.
- The Emporia Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Extravaganza will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fairgrounds. Free hot dogs and other food will be provided. Public safety and health organizations will demonstrate ways to prevent fires and how to escape them.
- The Flint Hills Community Health Center will hold a vaccination clinic on Thursday in the Anderson Building at the Lyon County Fairgrounds. Shots will be $15, while they last. The clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and volunteers are needed to assist. Participants should wear short-sleeved clothing and bring proof of insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. - The Friends of the Library’s fall book sale begins on Wednesday and continues through Friday at the library.
- The Emporia Arts Council will present the Jupiter String Quartet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in Heath Recital Hall. The cost is $30 for adults, $7.50 for youths, and free for ESU students.
- Pets can be neutered or spayed for $10 off the entire month of October during the annual project sponsored by the Humane Society of the Flint Hills in cooperation with Emporia veterinarians. Two discounts per family will be allowed.
- The annual Optimist Club Pancake Feed will be held on Saturday at the National Guard Armory, 1809 Merchant St.
- Don’t miss the “Can the Bods” competition during the ESU/Washburn football game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Welch Stadium. People who want to help ESU tromp the Ichabods again this year may take canned goods and other non-perishables to the Salvation Army, Reeble’s Country Mart and other collection points in the city.
