ESU falls 2-0 to Washburn

Friday, October 5, 2007

The signs of improvement are there for the Emporia State soccer team.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, a victory has not followed just yet.

ESU fell 2-0 to Washburn on Thursday in Topeka, which was a significant improvement over last month’s 6-0 loss to Washburn one month ago in Emporia.

On Thursday, the Lady Blues (6-4-3, 4-2-2 MIAA) received all their offense from Jessica Mainz. The All-American finished a pass from midfield with her first goal in the 27th minute, then added her second score off a cross from the left side in the 60th minute.

Mainz had WU’s first three-goal game in school history against ESU earlier this season.

The Hornets allowed just the two goals despite getting outshot 27-1.

ESU keeper Megan Martin, who is the MIAA leader in saves, had six stops. Her 90 saves this season already puts her at fourth in team history in single season saves.

The Hornets (0-12, 0-8 MIAA) play a road game against Drury on Saturday.
