Emporia Youth
Fun Run
The Emporia Area Youth Fun Run for boys and girls grades 1-8 will start at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Jones Park. The primary focus of the event is to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
The starting line will be at the south of the upper shelter house by the playground, and participants will need a release for signed by a parent/guardian.
Grades 1-2 will run a 1/2 mile at 5:30; grades 3-4 will run 3/4 of a mile at 5:40; grades 5-6 will run 3/4 of a mile at 5:55; and grades 7-8 will run a full mile at 6:10.
Participation ribbons will be given to all finishers.
The event is sponsored by Emporia State cross country, Emporia High cross country and the Emporia Track Club.

Ducks Unlimited
banquet and auction
The 22nd annual Banquet and Auction hosted by the Verdigris Valley Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be on Saturday at the Sauder Community Building in Madison.
Happy hour is 5:30 p.m., and steak dinner with all the trimmings starts at 7 p.m. The auction begins at 8 p.m. The Chapter also will be giving away four guns at the event.
Cost is $40 for members, $50 for couples and $15 for members of the Greenwings youth organization.

Emporia Kids
wrestling clinic
Emporia Kids Wrestling will be holding its 2007 Wrestling Clinic from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13 and Wednesday Nov. 14. The camp is open to any child 4 to 13 years of age.
The camp is an introductory clinic for kids that are interested in wrestling. There is no cost, and participants are asked to wear shorts and a T-shirt.
There also will be an instructional clinic for parents at the same time as the kids’ clinic.

MAYB winter and spring Tournaments
Mid-America Youth Basketball recently announced it 2007-08 winter and spring basketball schedule, which can be viewed at www.mayb.com.
MAYB will accept registrations from now through the winter tournament season. Teams are eligible for a four-tournament package if registration is received by Nov. 15. Tournaments are scheduled in Kansas and 10 other surrounding states.

Comedy Basketball Show
Emporia High will be playing host to the Harlem Rockets Comedy Basketball Show at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10.

Furharvester
education class
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and the Kansas Fur Harvesters Association will sponsor a Furharvester Education Class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21. There will be no charge for the class.
Those interested should meet at the American Legion Hall in Olpe at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 for registration. Please bring a sack lunch Saturday.
Adults are welcome and encouraged to attend with students. A minimum age of 11 is preferred. Topics will include modern trapping techniques for raccoon, bobcat, coyote, beaver and other furbearers, furbearer hunting, fur handling, ethics and laws and regulations. Saturday’s class will include a classroom session followed by a field session. Sunday will include a brief classroom session and review followed by testing.

Spartan basketball
All boys third through eighth grade that are interested in playing for the Junior Spartan youth basketball team this winter should contact coach Rick Bloomquist before Nov. 5.
All boys are welcome to play. No one will be turned away.

3rd Annual Connie Shell Memorial Golf Tourney
On Sunday, the Emporia Country Club will play host to the third annual Connie Shell Memorial Golf Tournament for Hand In Hand Hospice and cancer awareness.
Tee times will be at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. It is a four-person scramble, with chances to win in a gross or net division. Skill prizes will be given.
Educational information regarding Hospice and cancer awareness will be on site with numerous items being raffled or available for silent auction.
The day will wrap up with announcements of the tournament winners and an evening buffet dinner for everyone. Advanced dinner reservations are needed if not in the tournament.
Sign-up sheets are available at the Emporia Country Club pro shop, Hand In Hand Hospice, Central Care Cancer Center, Newman Regional Health east and north lobbies and the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
