Sears moves into larger space in Flinthills Mall

As the new owner and manager of Sears in Emporia, Mark Stockman’s first order of business was to move the store to the Flinthills Mall, where he expects to draw more customers.

“We needed a bigger sales floor, bigger back room,” said Stockman, who managed the former store on West Highway 50 for 2 1/2 years, commuting from his home in Peabody. “We’re more visible, have better parking and will have higher traffic.”

The store has an exterior entrance near the cinema and nail shop on the West 15th Avenue side of the mall. Although there’s no access to Sears from inside the mall, Stockman anticipates renting space in the mall for special sales.

Sears at the mall is open now, though unpacking continues; the former store is closed. Stockman will hold a grand re-opening at the end of the month to formally announce the new location and his new ownership.

“It’s so much easier,” here, Stockman said.

With a bigger store comes a larger service area, he said, and a better dock for unloading appliances and other merchandise.

The store soon will begin to sell mattresses and box springs, which Stockman couldn’t sell in the smaller store.

“It’s still a struggle to get set up here,” Stockman said on Wednesday. “But we’ll be in good shape by the end of the day.”

This is exactly what the "mall" needs. I will definetely be shopping at sears more, especially if the tool selection has improved.

Be careful if you have a Sears Card. They provide this tiny written statement that basically says "if you can't pay us, we'll come get it."

How do I know? I work in Law. Sears is one of the WORST cards to get (although they are one of the first to accept new applications, LOL).

Basically, anything you buy from them (on credit) is secured....and they have one of the worst interest rates in retail.

I hope the mall store is decent. I hope they have sections for men, women and children's clothing. Maybe a section for handbags/umbrellas, etc., too. Oh--and the perfume and make-up counter like "big" malls have.

Where, exactly, is the new location, that you can't get to from inside the mall? I haven't been around that side for a few years.

Ralph,

If you park in the south lot (bounded by Coach's to the east, the theater entrance of the mall on the north and Walgreen's on the west), the Sears store is just west of the theater entrance.

If you've been around as long as I have, you'll recognize it as just to the left of the old Terrell's Liquor Store space, which became Curves for awhile and now is a manicure place.

Sears basically took the southeast corner of the old Food 4 Less spot and built an outside entrance. The entrance is right by the old semi-loading bays for the grocery store.

P.S. I understand from folks here lots longer than I that this REALLY is the old Montgomery Wards spot!

MelissaE,
Every so often, Sears offers one year at 0% on credit purchases. Over the years, that's when I have purchased my major appliances and paid them off in about nine or ten months. Sure, it's a teaser rate, but if you're disciplined and can pay your purchase off in one year or less, it works, then you just wait until the next time to make another purchase. I'd like to see more tools at the new store. Everybody in town is selling beds.

I would like to see them bring clothing and such also. Right not its just the same crappy store in a dif. spot. create- I do the same thing with my Sears card. You can't afford to use it any other way. I had 18 months to pay off an $800 tv with no interest. That was great. Then I got a $30 gift certificate to K-Mart for being a good customer. The gift was cool but I had to go to Topeka to use it??!!

Weltha, that's how I'm gonna buy my next TV set. My new dishwasher is almost paid for at 0%. You can't beat Maytag or Kenmore. I still have my first Kenmore purchase made in 1965, Memphis. It was a console sewing machine that I still use today for quilting. All metal parts, and the repairman who cleans and oils it for me every couple of years says don't ever get rid of it.

Thats really the only way I make big purchases like that. I don't shop alot at Guions but when I do I make sure they are running the same type of deal. I may have to wait for my item but sometimes that keeps me from impulse buying as well. Interest rates are just out of control on store credit.
