Penny Supper

The Hartford United Methodist Women will serve the Penny Supper, beginning at 5 p.m., Saturday at the Methodist Church. Some foods to be served are ham loaf, $1.25; chicken pie, $1.50; liver and onions, $2; a variety of home-cooked vegetables and salads,50 cents; and pie, $1.25.

Barbecue Benefit

A Barbecue Benefit for “4 Paws for Ability, Inc.” will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Messiah Lutheran Parking Lot, 1101 Neosho St.

The cost is $4 a plate for a barbecue sandwich or hot dog, chips, baked beans and beverage. Funds raised will be used to help buy an autism service dog for Andrew Smith, five-year-old son of Janice Schade.

The dog will be trained in search and rescue and behavioral commands.

Checks need to be made payable to the Messiah Lutheran Church. Matching funds will come from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. For more information, call Cathy Birk at 340-2401.

Americus Pancake Day

Americus United Methodist Church will have a Pancake Day from 6:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Americus School.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Americus School.

Maine Lobster Dinner set for Oct. 20

A traditional Maine Lobster Dinner will be served at the First Congregational Church, 326 W. 12th Ave., on Oct. 20 at a cost of $20 per person.

Seating times can be arranged for 5, 5:30, 6 or 6:30 p.m. Ticket purchases and reservations may be made from 9 a.m. to noon at the church or by calling 342-6854 or 344-3518. The deadline for purchasing tickets is Oct. 12.

The menu includes fresh Maine lobster, baked potato, coleslaw, green beans, coffee or tea and brownie ala mode dessert. Proceeds go to the church’s Special Project Funds.

Fall book sale starts Oct. 12

The Friends of the Emporia Public Library will hold its annual Fall Book Sale Oct. 12-17 at the library, 110 E. Sixth Ave. The sale will be held during the library regular hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday; and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. All proceeds benefit library programs and sales.

The sale includes books for adults, teens and children, videos, compact discs and more. An assortment of discarded library computer equipment will be available for sale this year. A special sale will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. for Friends of the Library Life members. Other Friends of the Library members may shop from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 11. Memberships will be sold at the door throughout the evening.

Special bargain sales are planned on this schedule: Oct. 15, all items will be half price; Oct. 16, all items that can be stuffed into a grocery bag, $4 a bag; Oct. 17, $2 for each bag.
