Southern Lyon school board
An executive session to discuss personnel matters is on the agenda for the Southern Lyon County board of education. the meeting will start at 7 p.m. Monday in the central office in Hartford.
Among other items on the agenda are an architect’s report, naming of Flint Hills Cooperative hearing officers, emergency substitutes, facilities, and pest control services.
Essay contest for
middle school students
“Why I Am an American Patriot” is the topic of the 12th annual essay program sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary “Patriot’s Pen Program,” according to an announcement from Kansas VFW Commander Karl “Doug” Musick of Salina.
The contest, with prizes totaling $53,000, is open to middle school students.
Students may write an essay of 300 to 400 words and submit typewritten entries to their local VFW post chairmen by Nov. 1.
First prize in the contest is a $10,000 U.S. savings bond.
The VFW “Voice of Democracy Program” competition for high school students is now underway. The theme for this year’s audio essay program is “My Role in Honoring America’s Veterans.” Scholarships and awards will be given, including the first-place scholarship of $30,000. The entry deadline also is Nov. 1.
The Kansas Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary, through their Endowment Association, also offer college and vocational school scholarships to the children and grandchildren of its membership. Applications are available from local VFW Post 1980. The deadline for submission is Feb. 1.
