Parents and students at Walnut Elementary School are planning to take to the sidewalks early Wednesday morning as they participate in International Walk to School Day.
“This is something that our PTO parents have organized,” said Ben Coltrane, new principal this fall at the school.
The event celebrates the benefits of walking, according to a flyer from Carrie Poersch, PTO parent who has organized the walk.
Poersch sent a flyer to parents to list benefits of walking: physical activity, teaching safe walking skills to children, concern for the environment, sharing time between parents and children and reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools.
Participants will meet at 7:55 a.m. in the Church of Christ parking lot, 12th Avenue and Neosho Street, to walk en masse to school. The walk will end with “Pastries for Parents.”
“We upgraded from the pastries a little bit to the muffins from our food service,” Coltrane said. “We just have that light snack for our parents when they come in and, of course, we have a full meal for any student who wishes to eat breakfast...”
