Smoke-free needed

Originally published 02:01 p.m., October 2, 2007

I had the pleasure of attending my 10-year high school reunion recently. Many of my classmates came from all over the U.S. to come back to Emporia.

After the EHS game on Friday, we all met over at Natasha’s. Soon, I was hearing the same complaint from my classmates repeatedly. Nearly all of them came from cities where there was no smoking allowed in restaurants and bars. Many of them commented they did not enjoy being in such a smoky environment after being used to smoke-free areas.

Many of them wanted to know where Emporia was with going smoke free. These friends came from cities such as New York, Olympia and Lawrence. Somehow, I imagine that if these cities can go smoke free, Emporia can as well.

It is not about taking away smokers’ rights; it is about the right to not smoke. The right to breathe in clean air when we are out and about in Emporia.

This link shows the different cities and states around the country that are smoke free: http://www.no-smoke.org/pdf/100ordlist.pdf.

I whole-heartedly agree with this opinion. San Francisco is one of those cities that are smoke free. It's a nice change to dine or have a drink in a place that is not congested with smoke. Plus, afterwards, your clothing doesn't stink.

To those who argue that the rights of smokers are being taken away, I disagree. All that is being asked is for smokers to take the fumes outdoors. Reasonably, how long does it take to smoke a cigarette anyway, maybe five minutes? That's not too long to be outdoors (should the weather be extreme in heat or cold). Also, most of the bars in SF have covered, outdoor patios/balconies where smoking is permitted. (Many "non-smokers" like to "bum a smoke" when having a cocktail, right?)

Consider it. Try it. Non-smoking restaurants and lounges are really nice, just as addictive as the habit of smoking. :)

Well, there are plenty of bars in SF that permit smoking. And, I'm not talking about Marlboros. :)

I suffer from MCS (multi chemical sensitivity) & chemicals & scented products & smoke --kill me!!!!!!!!

I have to live in an MCS "safe home" that is chemical & fragrance free & have to limit where I go & what I'm able to do------if a business allows smoking---I'm not able to even enter it any more!

Not only do I wish Emporia was "smoke free"----but I also wish more people & businesses would think of how many ways they could use more "natural products" instead of so many chemicals & use not so many scented products---& I wish people would WEAR less scented products for ALL of our health!!

I also wish all the gift shops didn't sell all of those scented candles--------I'm sure they would be really surprised how many people DON'T shop with them because of those scented products!!!!!

Smoke Free would be a real positive for everyone!!!!!!!!!

I also live in a city where the law is non smoking in restaurants, lounges, finance companies, state & federal bldgs etc & I love it. How can you smokers blow your nasty smoke at innocent children and sleep at night. (Many are parents that smoke at home) YUCK! Who gives you the right? Think about others not just yourself. Find your own spot outdoors where you won't harm others. I respect smokers when they are at a distance. Please respect me! I try to keep a distance. I was a smoker for 15 years & smoked 3 pks/menthol a day & I smoked outdoors away from people & especially children, and this was before we had the non smoking laws. Come on smokers, be for real, be clean & let our kids live their lives.

You may have said it a little differently than I would have--but I could not agree with you more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to sell my last business & quit working & one of the main reasons was---- because most all of the people who came into my business had on enough of that horrible perfume or strong after shave or "stink'em" on their bodies that was sooooooooooooo strong you could also taste it as well as smell it!!!!!!!
After awhile they can't smell them selves-- so they just keep putting on more- & more & more--------
Now also ask these people if they have health problems--- & many of their health problems could be related to MCS -the chemicals they wear & expose the rest of us to!

Ya know the fact of the matter is that not all smokers are as considerate as others. I understand that smokers feel their rights are being infringed upon, however, non-smokers have rights also. A non-smoker chooses not to smoke and they have the right to be in a public place and not have to deal with smoke. Second hand smoke is worse than filtered smoke. I deal with asthma pretty regularly and have had to leave establishments because the smoke was starting an asthma attack. How fair is that? I have the right to enjoy dinner out with my family or a night out on the town with the girls just as much as the next person. It comes down to this......if a smoker wants to pollute his/her lungs so be it, but don't get angry at those of us who choose to live healthier and support a smoke-free environment.

Ks... you're right about the choices. I know at least one person who has wanted to go to Natasha's since it opened, but hasn't because it's a smoking establishment and he's terribly sensitive. He's also opted out of after-work gatherings because of the venues we've picked.

Too bad the reunion organizers didn't think about that before picking Natasha's. On the other hand, we in Emporia just "suck it up." But if someone like Brian -- who is used to lots of choices of smoke-free -- comes for a visit, they notice it more.

And, I, too, have experienced the reeking cologne syndrome.

KristieR (anonymous) says...

I distinctly remember being trapped in my mother's car while smoke swirled around my head. I developed asthma as a child and she is still in denial. But, it's a great excuse for me to forbid her to smoke in my house or around my children. She also now smokes outside (on a nice deck) at her own house.

My town is not smoke-free, but two of the restaurants are smoke free by choice. Those are the ones I frequent and I make sure they know that's the reason (and the good food). A bar is a bar and I expect it to be smoky. I don't like it, so I stay away. We also have one bar in town that is smoke free by choice, so I go there.

I'd rather see establishments choose to be sf than for it to be dictated by gov't.

The issue is about public health. Go to the 2006 Surgeon General's report, from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. www.surgeongeneral.gov

The report states that there is NO Risk Free Level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Scientific evidence indicates that breathing even a little secondhand smoke can be harmful to your health. Secondhand smoke causes lung cancer, heart disease, acute respiratory effects, SIDS, and many other health consequences.

If you want to make a difference in Emporia, contact the Lyon County Tobacco Free Coalition through the Health Department and let your words be put into action. It's all about public health, we regulate food quality, water quality, and more for public health, why not focus on air quality for the whole public?

Every day living causes cancer in one way shape or form. Just ask California. LOL My granddad smoked and lived to be 95. My grandma didn't ever smoke or drink for that matter and died of cancer at 55. I agree with Kristi in that it should be a choice not forced. I don't smoke first off. I enjoy going out for a beer. Do I like the smokey bar? Not really, but, I chose to go there. There places in town to eat that don't allow smoking. 2nd hand smoke is worse than filtered smoke? I agree with that, but..... the smoker is getting a double wammy compared to just 2nd. The only way suz that you are going to improve air quality is to make smoking illegal period. What did greenday say? Hail hitler I believe it was... Yep I see it coming. It makes me sad that America has become such a whinny, cry baby, sue happy country.

I agree that I hate for the gov't telling us what we can & can't do---that is for sure---but I'm very very very very concerned about no longer having safe air to breath anyplace & anywhere I go----because of smokers------& everyone in the this world thinking they have to use chemicals for everything they do---every where you go some one is spraying or useing some form of chemicals---& everything has to be scented--with more chemicals-------everyone has to put on tons of scented products-----every where you go people are useing scented products-----from scented toilet paper to horrible scented candles to air fresheners ----------What is happening to our PURE AIR SUPPLY---OUR PURE WATER SUPPLY????
Lets use some more chemicals & scented products--& spray some more chemicals on our food supply--- & lets have second hand smoke where ever you try to go!!!
I do so wish everyone who had any sort of health problems would take a really--I mean really really good look at what they breath & what they drink & what they eat!!!!!!!!!
I'll be here in my MCS "safe home"--chemical & scent free drinking purified water & purified air & organic food & trying to stay away from chemicals & scented products--- just to stay alive --because------when I do leave home-- I have no control over how others live & use my air supply!!!
No I don't want the government telling me how I can live--what I should & should not do---but the government sure is supporting enough big chemical companies & the like-- that are destroying our planet as it is/ from our water supplies to our air we breath to the food we eat----etc/etc/etc-!!!!!!! And EACH PERSON could make a difference if they were aware of how they live their own lives! But too many don't care!

And I can say most all who I help set up "safe homes" for------all have many scented products they had not even thought of-----it is very very hard to buy everything you use UNSCENTED nowadays-------as there is real money for the chemical companies to be made in scenting everything people use --- & selling them more chemicals!!!
Bubble boy & you may laugh-----&-----I try to find as much humor in life as possible--------as it is not a real fun lifestyle trying to live chemical & scent free in order to continue living at all!!!!!!!!!!

Just a friendly note- Any business, at any time can go "Smoke-Free". In fact, there are several businesses here in Emporia that are indeed "Smoke-Free". Business owner's rights are also a part of this conversation, or should be. They reserve the right to refuse service, and if they want to refuse to allow smoking inside their individual establishment, then I encourage them to do so.

Before we start making laws, just because they have in other cities; maybe we should stop and remember that we could simply request some of our more favorite places to hang out, dine, or frequent if they have thought about going "Smoke-Free". Just an idea.

Absolute (anonymous) says...

As long as you don't infringe on my right to breath clean air, I don't care where you smoke.

Once a smoker lights up in a public place, he or she is instantly infriging on everyone else's rights.

When ONE person decides to smoke in a restaurant or any other place, they are making the decision that everyone else in that place will be exposed to the smoke and all the risks that come with that (higher risk of cancer, damage to lung tissue...) I don't think they should have that right.

You have the right to smoke. The right to smoke where YOU are only damaging YOUR lungs.

Why do smokers have the right to damage my lungs? or my children's lungs?

And I do hope that establishments realize that most people don't want to smoke and create more smoke free places. For now, it is a public health issue and needs to be addressed.

If someone was polluting our water and creating higher rates of cancer and various other issues, we would not continue to let them have the "right" to pollute the water. Why are giving people the "right" to pollute our air?

Kstrebuchet, that is a stretch and you know it. How would our economy be affected if there was no motorized transportation allowed? You know that wouldn't work.

Penny (anonymous) says...

No amount of tax revenue from the sale of tobacco will ever come close to paying for the health costs created by tobacco in smokers and those unfortunate enough to be around them.

Sometimes laws have to be enacted for the public good, such as clean water, sanitation, clean indoor air. Cities who have enacted clean indoor air ordinances have seen rates of lung cancer (the number cancer killer), asthma, emphysema, etc decrease in the years following that decision. Emporians are worthy of that protection, fight for clean indoor air!

I find what is a real problem is when
I am able & want to be able to go some place & I have called to find out if is NON-Smoking-----
at the door way------or entrance of each NON-Smoking establishment I have wanted to enter---many many many times -----is some one or many some one's standing right out side of the door way SMOKING!!!!!!!!! And fogging the area with lots of SMOKE!!! So there is no way to enter with out being exposed to tons of smoke!
Many times business maybe NON-SMOKING ---but there are workers on break------or other shoppers standing very very close to the entrances fogging the place with smoke that I can't get through with out being not only exposed ----but flooded with smoke!!!!!!
Not all smokers think of others/ who have health problems & try to go out of their way to avoid their smoke!!!
I would truly/ truly appreciate if some one smokes- & they go outside of the NON-SMOKING establishment to smoke ---they would NOT gather right where others are trying to enter or exit!
There are many businesses where I want to be able to shop---& their workers on break or others are standing gathered together smoking very close to the doorways!!!!!!!!
This has caused a very big problem for me------because I do have sever health problems & shopping is not easy for me any time-------but trying to shop & avoid smokers has become a real problem!
I also had family in the hospital--& wanted to be able to check on them-- & take them some things they needed-& each door way to enter the hospital had all these smokers all gathered smoking----- & no way to avoid them! Several were people who worked in the hospital!
I wish they could find another place to smoke other than the entrance to the buildings & businesses!!
As that would be very helpful to those of us who do have sever health problems & smoke is a real threat to us & our health!

Kstrebuchet---- I really hope you can quit smoking one day very soon also!!!!
IF --Not for any one's sake but for your own!!!!!!!!!!!

I begged my oldest brother for years to quit smoking---as he smoked at least 3 packs a day---it was an addiction he just could not whip----& I thought my brother could walk on water---so I was sure he could quit smoking--------when they found a brain tumor------& they cut open his head to relieve the pressure----& didn't know if he would live or not--------he made it through the surgery & he quit smoking------he lived for a year before they found the cancer was all through his body.
The cancer had started in his lungs & then spread------

It is a terrible-- terrible-- horrible thing-----cancer is-------I have lost too many family members to cancer------& I have been the caregiver to--/ too many family members with cancer--
I really-really & truly hope you can quit smoking one day very soon also!!!!!!
Just know I care--------OK???????

This issue as with most others in Emporia - our town is not exacting known for progessive or forward thinking initiatives.

I've had the pleasure of living in 8 other cities across the country, and many times wonder -- why on earth did I come back to this sad little town? Smoke free environments are fantastic.

I do however agree with whoever posted the comment - if you go to a bar or pool hall/drinking establishment you really kind of have to expect smoking - it just goes hand in hand. But WOW, if any of you have had the chance to go clubbing in smoke free environments - it is great. Your clothes don't wreak to high heaven and you don't have the stuffed up sinuses from breathing all the smoke.

I agree with you about choice, we Americans are pretty adamant about that. Plus, choice is a powerful motivator no matter what the issue. By the way, and please don't take this as preaching; I don't mean for it to be, but I quit after 30 years. I had tried several times before because others were telling me I should. That's why it didn't work, I'm sure. Once I decided for myself, it worked. That and the patch. That was 7 years ago. You'll quit when you're good and ready, just like my kids did when it was time to put away the bottle. They quit when they were good and ready, and neither went too long.

About choice:
Recently, for my teenage daughter's birthday I wanted to take her to a fun place for dinner where they sing to the birthday girl and bring a treat, like Applebees or Carlos O'Kelley's. However, all the places I could think of allow smoking. So, my "choice" was severely limited, in other words not a "choice" at all. Why does "choice" have to mean 1)have fun and put your health at risk or 2) can't go to fun places to preserve health.

And in response to some earlier points:
*The hospital grounds are now entirely smoke free.
*A list of smoke free businesses is available through the Lyon *County Tobacco Free Coalition, ask for Suzanne at 342-4864.
*Quitting smoking is hard work, I know from first hand experience. Most people attempt quitting 7 or 8 times before finally becoming non-smokers. When you're ready to try again, help is available at the Kansas Tobacco Quitline at 1-866-KAN-STOP. Your lungs and your wallet will thank you!

One fear that business owners often have is that they will lose business by going smoke-free. The opposite is true when clean indoor air ordinances are passed, business goes up from those who have had to avoid the establishment in the past because there actually far more non-smokers than smokers.

Most non-smokers I know are not concerned about "rudeness or offensiveness" of second-hand smoke, just the health concerns.

Those that think the tobacco has nothing to do with the economy ought to do a little more research into the subject matter and consider what they will tax next when everyone is forced to stop smoking due to the outrageous and excessive taxing placed on tobacco products.

I am a smoker, but am considerate of others around me when I do. I do not smoke in my home or near my family. If you don't smoke, I refuse to smoke in your house or car even if you offer the opportunity. I prefer smoke free restaurants myself, I don't care to chew on someone else's smoke. I do not stand in non-smoking buildings entryways smoking. I do not throw my cigarette butts on the ground, nor out the window while driving. I would prefer you worry and deal with your own health and not try to control mine.

Isn't it a bit hypocritical to blame cigarette smoke for harming your health, then admitting consuming alcohol which serves no other purpose than to cop a buzz? One claimed that automotive exhaust is necessary, tell that to the pioneers who settled this country. One shouldn't stand in a glass house and throw stones, something that you participate in could be the next creative taxation action.

I am home bound most of the time in my "Safe Home" which is chemical & scent free------& I have written articles & I have spoken at meetings & I have personally talked to hundreds of people & educated them about keeping a "safe home" chemical & fragrance free-etc/etc/etc-------

I personally know many of these people I have talked with have educated many more people on not using chemicals & scented products!

So you can believe what ever you like-----I personally know the difference I'm making! And I have hundreds of names of people to prove it!!!!!!!!!! I guess when I really think about it-----I really have thousands of people / I call friends who have changed their lifestyles to chemical & fragrance free!!

So you may have told me some time ago-----this one old fat woman could not make a difference--------but you can't tell me that any more!

I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE & I KNOW THE PEOPLE BY NAME !!!!!!

MrCmonkeeDo was so sick HE almost died once. HE didn't ask God for nothin'; ya know why? 'Cause HE was so sick HE was dyin'. MrC's brain just wasn't working like that. Maybe it was HIS brain shutting down (beginning IT's dying process) or the drugs the Docs pumped through HIM or a combo of the two, the result was that MrC's brain went into a sort of weird "Stand By" mode. God never entered HIS thoughts because HE had no thoughts, most of the time. So HE's always skeptical when someone relates their "near death" experience as Flips just has.

But then again MrCmonkeeDo has always been way too skeptical in my opinion.

Still...it is one of those things that make ya go Hmmm.

I guess I should have said for "your benefit ---MRCMONKEEDO" I was so sick I almost died & when I was actually being able to feel /I was rationalizing some things in my brain AGAIN!!!!!!!!!! As the chemicals had also attack my nervous system.
As that is how it was ------but I guess I didn't go into deep detail of ALL of that /as I really didn't realize that was the important part of my story!!!!!!!!!!!!
And as one who suffers from MCS----- I don't take any chemical drugs at all!!!!!!
I do know that the doctors that did treated me--at that time----a year later told me/ they didn't believe they were going to be able to save me/ I'm sure glad they didn't tell me then!! As I believe "Hope" makes a big difference also!
Since I have only experienced this once in my life----I don't know what "your experience" was like-----& I'm sure not all experience things the same! But I do know /I never want to be that sick again-----I would like to just die in my sleep! And not experience what I went through!

Kstrebucket-----maybe NOT everyone in the world will stop useing chemicals & scented products------but there are a lot of people just like me out there educating others----& if only one other person quits useing all the chemicals & scented products THEN ---THAT IS A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!
And each day--------if I continue to give HOPE & continue to educate /--& all the others give hope & educate--- there is a difference & will continue to make a difference!
IF I was that NEGATIVE & thought I could not make a difference----then all the people/ I have helped would NOT have been helped!!!!!!
Can I change the whole world-----No I can't-- but I can make a difference-------& so could you-----IF you wanted to!

Kstrebuchet am I understanding your position correctly? You are not concerned about the majority of non-smokers and their right to breathe clean air? Just because the status quo suits you does not make it equitable.

Penny (anonymous) says...

Oh, I think you misunderstand--I am terribly concerned about all smokers! And, thank you for your very kind offer to get non-smokers a place to do what we want, when we want! When shall I expect to see your grand opening of the first non-smoking bar in Emporia?

Isn't one of those bars on 6th and mechanic smoke free. Babes or something like that? They used to be.

When laws were made to make seatbelt use mandatory, death rates fell. When cities pass clean INDOOR air ordinances, death rates fall. Seems really simple, its totally about the big picture--public health. Do some people continue to "choose" not to wear seat belts--of course they do, can't buckle it for them! Can't (and don't want to) force people to stop smoking, just to stop doing it INDOORS where other people's lungs happen to be. Thanks to the original author for opening this much needed discussion!

I would imagine if there were a big demand for a smoke free tavern, one that would attract and maintain a profitable customer base, one would already be open.

Perhaps you should consider it as a business venture Penny.

"Live and let live"

I agree. 100%

If you don't like what's on TV, turn the channel. If you don't like an establishment because it allows smoking, don't go. If you don't like who's in office, vote. If you don't like where you work, find another job.

Duh.

I guess it would be closer to live and let die :)
Since you asked, here are some sites that have very good information. Not nastiness or emotion about your choices or my choices but facts.

http://www.cleanairkc.com/documents/J...
http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library...

There are a wealth of sites from the many states and communities who have such progressive ordinances, google them and see for yourself! You may be amazed at what a big difference it makes.

Debate is always good when it makes people think.

Random surveys of Emporians actually show that a majority (I think it was 78% but cannot remember for sure, haven't seen that data for awhile) actually favor clean indoor air ordinances. Apparently most of those people have better things to do than follow this "discussion". Guess I do too, really!

Judging from the spewing of snide comments I'm thinking a few took my comments as a personal attack--they were not. Please recall that I have never said I thought we should keep you from smoking or that you are "bad" because you smoke. I know all too well the horrible craving for a nicotine fix as I smoked for a number of years in my youth. And I know that even the thought of not being able to get that fix when you need it is terrifying. But I have also watched dying people gasping their last breath, fighting for each breath they took. And that is pretty terrifying too, especially for people who never even smoked. That is where I'm coming from, I wouldn't wish that on anybody! Peace...

With the current discussion going on with landlords, I can't help but draw a smilarity. I know that many people feel that the government shouldn't step in and tell business owners what they can and can not allow in their establishments. Let people decide where they choose to go and spend their money.

So how does that compare to the landlord debate? Should the government put housing standards in place that in affect tell business owners how to run their business? Don't renters have a choice?

"Don't like the way your landlord keeps things up? Move."

Absolute:

I think your point is valid but have to mention that Chase County has very few "codes" and people seem to be just fine over there. In fact, they may be earning a bit of money by redoing Hwy 177 and gaining tourists.

And, btw, I would move if my landlord was crap.....

Flips (anonymous) says...

I think that depends on WHERE IN CHASE COUNTY!!!!!!!
You might need to drive through the WHOLE COUNTY & take a really good look around!!!!!!
And look twice at some of the rentals in Chase county & WHO THEY ARE OWNED BY! And why some are bothered to clean up etc/etc--------but others AREN'T--------
Why some are expected to clean up their properties & others aren't!!!!!!
We have owned property all over Chase county for over 50 years & still do-----I have a different out look on that fact- than you do-----with that many years experience & events & tales I could tell!!

I thought this was a "to smoke or not to smoke" debate. How did it go from that to insulting people because of where or how they live. And, no I do not live in Chase county, but know a few who do and they certaintly blow your stereo type out of the water!!

October 14, 2007 at 10:42 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

yankee (anonymous) says...

It seems to me that a common theme in this debate is that non-smokers, if you do not like the the smoke in restaurants then do not go. It is not really said that smokers if you do not like a smoke free environment do not go into that establishment. So smokers get to enjoy every palce there is and non-smokers are banned...yup that is fair. SMOKERS---WHEN YOUR RIGHTS INFRINGE ON MY RIGHTS AND MY HEALTH THERE IS NO CONTEST AS TO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. A smoke free environment does not infringe on your health in the least except maybe it is one less cigarette on the road to emphysema, lung cancer, etc.... I do not care if you smoke because ultimately you smokers are job security for me!!!! I just care where and who you do it around!!! Since most smokers do not care there should be a city ordinance.
