AARP driver safety program
The AARP Driver Safety Program, a driver refresher course designed for drivers age 50 and over, will be held Oct. 13 from 8 a.m. to noon, with a one-hour lunch break, and from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Lyon County Extension Office, 618 Commercial St. The course is free but there’s a $10 charge for a workbook.
Participants will learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws, rules of the road, how to adjust one’s driving to age-related changes in vision and hearing, and reaction time and more.
According to a news release, there also is an insurance discount, as automobile insurance companies in Kansas provide a multi-year discount to AARP graduates. One does not have to take a test.
This course is open to drivers of all ages. This will be the last class in Emporia this year. For more information, call Jerry Marshall, instructor, at 342-5841.
‘Bloody Bill’ Anderson
“‘Bloody Bill’ Anderson Kills Judge A.I. Baker, President of the Americus Town Company” is the program topic at the 7 p.m. meeting Thursday of the Lyon County Genealogical Society at the Cultural Hall of the Emporia Family History Center, 2313 Graphic Arts Road.
Michael Shimeall will talk about this 1862 murder and the 1972 archeological dig, which explored the site of the murder near the Lyon-Morris County line along the Santa Fe Trail.
Shimeall participated in the dig and wrote his master’s thesis about the event.
