Schwenn gets job in Georgia

ESU official to lead Dalton State College

Friday, November 30, 2007

John Schwenn, Emporia State's vice president for academic affairs since 1997, is headed to Georgia for a permanent job as a college president.

Schwenn, who served as ESU’s interim president in 2006, today was appointed president of Dalton State College in Dalton, Ga.. The Georgia Board of Regents was scheduled to officially approve Schwenn’s appointment this afternoon.

Schwenn will take over the northwest Georgia college of about 4,400 students on March 1. ESU President Michael Lane will begin a national search for his replacement.

“Along with the wonderful colleagues, peers and friends from whom I have learned much, I am grateful to former president Dr. Kay Shallenkamp, who gave me the opportunity to advance my career, and to Dr. Michael Lane, whose global perspective on higher education has been instrumental in my decision to lead an institution of higher education,” Schwenn said.

Dalton State College, founded in 1963, employs 128 full-time faculty members. Schwenn will become the institution’s fourth president. He was one of three finalists whose names were submitted to the Georgia Board of Regents by the DSC presidential search and advisory committee.

“Dr. Schwenn strongly believes in collaboration and the power of partnerships,” said James R. Jolly, the chair of the Regents committee that interviewed the three finalists. “He has the ability to move Dalton State forward and is sure to be an asset to the university system of Georgia.”

Schwenn first came to Emporia State in 1989, when he was hired as an associate professor and associate chair of the division of psychology and special education. In 1994, he became vice president for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies and research.

Schwenn has served on the board of trustees for Flint Hills Technical College since 2003.
