Lady Cats hope returning experience will produce better results

Friday, November 30, 2007

After watching his team suffer through a 3-18 season a year ago, Northern Heights girls basketball coach Tim Riemann hopes the lessons learned from last season’s difficulties start to pay dividends this year.

The Lady Wildcats lost just two crucial players to graduation — guard Kiley Stinson and forward Ashley Siess — and return nine varsity letterwinners, making what Riemann believes will be one of the top teams in the Flint Hills League.

“I’m looking forward to a very good season,” Riemann said. “We are coming off a 3-18 season, but the experience that was gained will be very beneficial to us this season. This is a good group of girls, and they have been working very hard, and I have very high expectations.”

Four starters are back for Northern Heights, including two All-Flint Hills League selections in point guard Amy Lee and guard/forward Sarah Boline.

Boline and Lee, both juniors, are the top two returning scorers from a season ago after averaging 7.2 and 6.7 points per game, respectively.

Also back are fellow juniors Alex DeLong at guard and Andrea Miller at forward.

Lee, Boline, DeLong and Miller each are expected to continue to start. As for the fifth starting role, that will come either from a crop of five players with varsity experience or two newcomers.

Forward Leann Baird averaged 4 points per game last season to lead the reserves vying for a starting spot. Forward Amy Boline, along with guards Danielle Dreier, Tess Hobson and Sky Linsey, will compete for playing time.

Expected to contribute minutes this season are a pair of sophomores in guard/forward Christena Zumbrum and guard Kaylee Eklund.

With so much returning, Riemann said he expected his team to be able to work quicker out on the court.

“We will be an aggressive team and look to push the ball up the court offensively,” Riemann said. “Defensively, we will look to pressure the ball and force turnovers.”

Northern Heights opens its season Friday with a home game against Lyndon.
