Burlingame boys clip Waverly in OT

Friday, November 30, 2007

Chris Walker and Chris Patterson came up with consecutive three-point plays in overtime, helping Burlingame hold on in a 66-63 victory over Waverly on Thursday night in Burlingame.

Walker hit a conventional 3-pointer to start the extra period, while Patterson followed with a two and free throw to give the Bearcats a 61-55 lead at the beginning of overtime.

Waverly had a chance to tie it in the final seconds, but Mason Fleming missed a three-point attempt.

“It was a typical first game: lots of fouls and lots of missed layups,” Burlingame coach Creighton Winters said. “The missed free throws really hurt us, and at times I thought we could have pulled away if we had just finished close to basket.”

Burlingame made just 12 of its 27 free-throw attempts.

With the score tied at 55, the Bearcats almost won it at the end of regulation.

Burlingame drove the length of the floor for the final shot, but Dustin Droege’s 15-footer missed.

Patterson led the Bearcats, scoring a game-high 22 points. Austin Masters added 17, while Walker also hit double figures with 11.

Fleming paced Waverly, notching 16 points. Kale Hamm had 13, while Kevin Schmidt, Dakota Foster and Mike Sarver contributed 8 each.
