Essay contest

Kansas students, grades 8 to 12, are eligible to enter the annual essay contest, “Kansas! Say It Above a Whisper,” sponsored by the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas. Essays must be limited to 250 words and postmarked no later than Dec. 7, 2007. Entries should be sent to Native Sons and Daughters, P.O. Box 546, Topeka, KS 66601 or, if possible, e-mailed to: jpinegar@sbcglobal.net. The cash prize is $200. The news release said the contest title, “which deals with pride in the state of Kansas was coined by early-day Kansas newspaperwoman, Mamie Boyd, whose family provides the cash awards.” The essay contest is judged by a panel of Kansas Professional Communicators, formerly Kansas Press Women. The judges look for “originality, creativity and sincerity in expressing pride in the state of Kansas.” No entries will be returned, but are given to the Kansas State Historical Society to be preserved in the manuscript department.

Entries also are being accepted for the 2008 Kansas Factual Story Contest, which, according to the press release, “encourages preserving in writing, factual, unpublished happenings and anecdotes in the lives of Kansans,” also sponsored by the Native Sons and Daughters. Olive Ann Beech of Wichita provided cash awards for winners for more than 30 years. After her death, the support has been continued by her daughter, Mary Lynn Oliver of Wichita. Beech Memorial cash awards are $175, first place; $125, second place; $100, third place; and $50 each for two honorable mentions. All stories may be preserved in the KSHS manuscript department.

Stories should have taken place in Kansas, be limited to 750 words, be true and not published, with the contest open to anyone, anywhere. Only one story may be entered each person and postmarked no later than Dec. 7, 2007. If possible, entries should be submitted to: jpinegar@sbcglobal.net. Judges will be by a panel from the Kansas State Historical Society.

Winners of both contests will be announced at the annual meeting of the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas on Jan. 25, 2008.

Entries and questions may be directed to John Pinegar, Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas, P.O. Box 546, Topeka, KS 66601; (785) 235-6245.
