Barnes knows her ABC and Ds.

Nikki Barnes, Banner administrator for the technology and computing services department at Emporia State University, has always taught the “ABCD Principle” — going “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty” — to others. This month, she has been chosen for a You Make a Difference Award for living up to that same attitude.

“When I was in college, I worked in a group home for troubled teens. Each night, we would have a ‘family meeting’ where anyone could recognize another individual in the house for going ABCD. My advice for others would be to always try to follow the ABCD principle by going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty, and in turn, acknowledging and encouraging others when they have done so,” Barnes explained.

Barnes, who graduated from Emporia State, returned four years ago as an administrator of the Banner system and its various subsystems. The Banner system is a program that provides secured information and services access for Emporia State students and faculty through the ESU Web site.

A major component of the Banner system, BuzzIn, is ESU’s new Web portal. Similar to other Web portals, such as My Yahoo or My MSN, BuzzIn allows ESU users to personalize and customize displayed content to suit their information needs. The BuzzIn portal serves as the single point of entry for the university’s information assets.

In addition to her technological role on campus, Barnes is also active in professional organizations. She belongs to the KC Oracle Users Group, Oracle Technology Network and the Balanced Scorecard Collaborative.

Barnes enjoys the work she does on campus.

“I like working with friendly people, especially those with a good sense of humor,” said Barnes. “The multi-faceted nature of my position allows me to work with so many different people and technologies, that I could never get bored!

“I feel honored to receive this award, and am grateful that someone took the time to make me feel appreciated,” said Barnes.

Congratulations Nikki! Our buttons are popping with pride! Although parents are usually always the first to tell you how great their children are, its wonderful to read such outstanding things about them here also. I am so happy that others can see the outstanding job you do at work and also in working with others.
We've always known you have the potential to do many great things and this is just one of them. I know that in the future we will hear more great things about you.
Congratulations Nikki from your Dad and I. Always know that your family is always beside you and behind you in all that you do. We love you very much, Tom & Sandy Barnes
