Stanbrough, Camien named Coaches of the Year

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

The area saw two high schools bring home cross country titles this fall, and now, the coaches of both those State champion teams have been recognized for their efforts.

Emporia High’s Mark Stanbrough on the boys side and Olpe High’s Tom Camien on the girls side were named Cross Country Coach of the Year in their respective classifications, the Kansas Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association announced Tuesday.

Stanbrough received the Class 5A boys Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Spartan boys to the 5A State championship after four straight runner-up finishes at the State meet. The Spartans did not lose to a team from the state of Kansas this fall, and won the State title by a whopping 32 points over defending State champion St. Thomas Aquinas.

Camien earned Coach of the Year in Class 1A for coaching the Olpe girls to the State title, including individual champion Sharon Zeller. The State title was the fifth for the Lady Eagles, and Zeller’s title was the first individual championship for an Olpe girl since Michelle Stueve won it in 2002.

Four Emporia High cross country runners also picked up Academic All-State first-team honors.

On the girls side, senior State champion Michaela Reynolds was named to the Class 5A All-Academic cross country squad. On the boys side, EHS runners made up more than half of the academic honorees, as seniors Tyler Anliker, Asher Delmott and Mike Robinson took three of the squad’s five spots in Class 5A.

A student-athlete is eligible for All-Academic status if they are a junior or senior, have an unweighted grade point average of 3.75 or higher and placed in the top 30 at this year’s State cross country meet.
