At the first media timeout, Emporia State coach David Moe gathered his players around him and uttered words that he was not used to saying: “I really don’t have anything bad to say about your defense.”
Caleb Tegtmeier wasn’t positive he was hearing right.
“I’m not sure,” Tegtmeier said, “if that’s ever going to happen again.”
The Hornets — known for their high-powered offense under Moe — showed a different side Monday night, holding Ottawa to just three points in the opening 8 1/2 minutes of a 77-43 rout of the Braves.
The 43 points allowed was the Hornets’ second-best defensive showing in Moe’s seven seasons at ESU.
Ottawa trailed 7-1 after the first media timeout, going 0-for-3 from the field with three turnovers.
“We did such a great job early in the game,” Moe said. “Usually, as a coach, you’re correcting mistakes, but we didn’t really do anything wrong in the first four minutes.”
ESU extended that streak through the next stoppage in play, taking a 21-3 lead into the second media timeout. Ottawa’s first field goal — a layup by Marquis Washington — came 7 minutes, 16 seconds into the game.
“We came out really sluggish last game,” ESU guard Spencer Allen said, “and we wanted to change that around.”
Led by its defense, ESU took a 43-22 lead into the half, holding Ottawa to just five field goals and 23.8 percent shooting.
“That’s not a very common occurrence around these parts,” Tegtmeier said. “It’s definitely not something we do often.”
ESU also was patient and efficient on offense, making 14 of 28 first-half shots and 11 of 12 free throws.
Moe later called it one his team’s best halves of the year.
The big advantage led to extensive minutes for ESU’s reserves, who started coming in before the midway point of the second half.
All but two Hornets played double-digit minutes.
Meanwhile, the ESU starters — who had just played a high-tempo game against Midwestern State on Saturday — wrapped towels around their heads and enjoyed their minutes on the bench.
“I was tired,” Tegtmeier said. “I don’t know if it was what I ate before the game or that we played two days ago. It felt good to sit down and watch those guys play.”
ESU once again was led by Wes Book, who added to his impressive start to the season.
The senior finished with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting, also making 4 of his 6 three-point attempts.
Book now is averaging a team-high 21.8 points through ESU’s first four games.
Tegtmeier, who was heavily recruited by Ottawa out of high school, added 13 points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes.
DeAndre Townsend just missed on an unconventional double-double, posting 10 points and nine assists.
ESU forced 22 Ottawa turnovers and held the Braves to 27.1 percent shooting.
“A lot of ball pressure was the main thing,” Tegtmeier said. “We got up in them pretty good. I don’t think they see that a lot.”
The Hornets (4-0) will have an eight-day layoff before taking on Newman next Wednesday at White Auditorium.
After that, ESU will go on the road for six straight contests, with its next home date coming Jan. 9 against Washburn.

I remember back in '72, playing Otto, we were down by 2, Otto had me being gaurded by the three biggest, meanest guys they had, I get the ball at half court, long shot, but had to go for it, I fake to the left, two of the guys knocked heads I go right, I'm in the air!! It seams like an eternity goes by, I make a wild pass toward the hoop, the backboard shatters just as the buzzer goes off and into the hoop it goes !!! Just one flaw in all that, when I faked left and went right, I went too far and through into Otto's hoop. I got the crap beat out of me in the locker room.
