Gas line ruptures near Hutchinson

Thursday, November 22, 2007

A Panhandle Eastern natural gas pipeline ruptured in a fiery explosion Wednesday afternoon in a field northeast of Haven, shaking homes for miles and sending flames hundreds of feet into the air.

The 30-inch-diameter gas pipeline was quickly shut down after the explosion, which happened around 3 p.m. southeast of the intersection of Lake Cable and Victory roads.

"Officers in this area said it shook the ground," said Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson.

Local firefighters who responded put out a grassfire before waiting for the "excess gas to burn off," Henderson said. By 5 p.m., the fire had subsided.

The cause of the rupture and explosion was not immediately clear.
