During this morning’s Lyon County Commission meeting, commissioners discussed a back-up plan for the Lyon County Extension Office’s move.
Because of an agreement with TFI Family Services, the Extension Office must be out of their location on Commercial Street by Nov. 30. The original plan was to move the office directly into the former Deer Trail building, located near the Lyon County Fairgrounds. Dan Slater, Lyon County controller, said this morning that the former Deer Trail building won’t be ready until around Jan. 1.
Slater said the new plan is to temporarily move the Extension Office in the Lyon County Annex, 402 Commercial. Slater said a large landing area in the building should be large enough to move over five desks and other necessary equipment for the Extension Office’s short-term operation. The area will have to be wired and Slater said Stutler Technologies doesn’t see a problem with getting that done in time.
“It’s not perfect, but it will get them by,” Slater told commissioners this morning.
Slater said there are some county dollars that will be spent for the move, but likely not more than $10,000.
“It sounds like a pretty good plan to me,” Commission Chairman Marshall Miller said this morning. “The consensus says Dan’s plan is a go.”
The plan is for the Extension Office to finish packing the first part of the week. On Wednesday, Thomas Transfer will help get the necessary equipment over to the Annex. The rest of the items will be stored in a trailer until the Extension’s permanent building is completed.

ok, now can anybody tell me why the plan is so far behind schedule? i pass the old deer trail building ever day. it hadn't been touched until just recently, and then there had been a flurry of building on it. why, if they knew there was a deadline, hadn't they been doing this all along instead of throwing another 10,000 of our tax dollars into the fire?? i say the county citizens deserve an explination.

Ten thousand dollars is a lot of money for a temporary move. Holy macaroni! LIke the comment before mine, I don't see much planning here. Of course Stutler Tech wouldn't see a problem with getting the temporary office ready -- not for ten grand! What's it gonna cost to wire the new building whenever that one is ready? Our taxes are the highest in the state and then we see this kind of waste. This really ruffles my feathers!

I bet you it would have cost less to talk to TFI and pay them to stay an additional month....I'm sure they would have cost less than 10,000.....did anyone even talk to them about staying another month past the contract? Probably not....not when the city just agrees to flush money down to toilet.....that would have been to easy.....

And Miller thinks that is a good deal? Isn't it his job to manage county business and tax dollars? How could ANYONE ever cast a vote in favor of that man?

If all of you think you can do so much better why don't one of you run for commissioner? Instead of just complaining about things. Did you ever think of that?

A1rentals in KC rents mobile office trailers for under $1000 a month set up on site with no long term lease. It could be set up in the parking at the future place. Total would be under $2000 and no one would have to look all over to find them. A1 rents mobile offices to many contractors in this area and I bet they could have one here next week if they were to call.

The county did attempt to talk to TFI but they have a contractor coming in December 3 to begin renovations at the 618 Commerical Building. They were unable to allow an extension to allow the Extension office to remain there until the new building was completed. The $10,000 covers the cost of moving all the furniture and the temporary offices --not just to set up a temporary office. Unfortunately the contractor is BEHIND, it was suppose to have been done by now!! Sometimes things are outside the commissioners control!

Didn't the County spend over a million for remodeling the old Haynes building on top of the original inflated purchase price? How much did they sell it for? Now we are going to pay more for the remodeling of the Deer Trail building then what the place was purchased for? Add in the construction delays, additional charges for temporary housing, unforeseen expenses, and heaven forbid if the flooring contractor fails them again like what happened at the Behemouth built at 5th and Commercial, and we could have once again built a brand new building instead dumping a ton of money into another "used" property.

Hey sv girl, I am a voter. I will complain if I ding dang want to! It's all part of living in a free society, kiddo. Ten thousand dollars is a lot of money to waste!
I can't believe the county isn't putting contractors on a completion bond.
I'd like to see a line item budget for this entire project.

Did anyone see the timeline on the last county commission story. There was a gap of six months between deciding to move and letting the bids. The bid for a job that the commission estimated would take 90-100 days was awarded in August. There wasn't much wiggle room built in from the beginning.
Not sure the contractor can bear full blame here; seems the commission could have let bids at least 3 months earlier.

What really cheeses me off on this whole thing is that the new office being built is not going to be nearly as good as the offices the extension is leaving now. Tiny kitchen, a much smaller meeting room, no storage space. It's a great location, near the fairgrounds and all, but not nearly as good a facility. Where all the groups that used to meet at the back meeting room on Commercial going to meet now? The Deer Trail building has plenty of room for a larger meeting space but the commissioners decided to do the job on the cheap so half the building is going to be just left empty.
And now the county agents have to move twice. Sheesh.

It's the same story time after time. If you want to put a dead line for the completition to contractors they will add a sizeable amount to the bid. That way the can get several jobs going at the same and assure that there is no down time for the workers and may just have one person on your job indicating work is going on. Balony. They do it all the time and this contractor should be held accountable. They have done it before.
