IRS wants to give these people money

In Lyon County, $6,716 in refunds unclaimed

Wednesday, November 21, 2007

The Internal Revenue Service wants you — if you’re among the 764 Kansas taxpayers who haven’t claimed refund checks totaling almost $550,000.

The checks, which average $719, were returned as undeliverable and may be claimed when owners update their addresses with the IRS. In Lyon County, there are $6,716 worth of unclaimed refunds.

“We want to get this money to the people it belongs to,” said Michael Devine, IRS spokesperson for Kansas. “It’s really a simple process. As soon as we get a correct address, we can reissue the check.”

The IRS has provided names and towns to The Gazette of people last living in Lyon and surrounding counties who have money owed to them.

Taxpayers also can log onto the IRS Web site, www.irs.gov, and click on “Where’s My Refund.”

“Most often, refund checks are returned to the IRS because a life change — such as a marriage or divorce — causes an address change,” said Devine.  If a taxpayer moves or changes his address and fails to notify the IRS or the U.S. Postal Service, Devine said, a refund check sent to his last known address is returned to the IRS.

Any taxpayers who have moved since filing their last tax return can ensure the IRS has their correct address by filing Form 8822, Change of Address, with the IRS. Download the form from the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov or request it by calling (800) 829-3676.

Here are those owed refunds in The Gazette’s circulation area, according to the IRS:

Lyon County

Hodan M. Adeed, Justin D. Ball, Kara A. Luedke, B. Shane Mast, Keila G. Munoz, Guillermo Peralta, Jenna L. Peterson, Jessica A. Reed, Scott K. Schoenfeld, Jody G. Stanford and Guillermo Vazquez.

All listed Emporia as their address.

Osage County

Edna D. Wehrle of Carbondale and Cassandra Schultz of Overbrook.
