Pat Flood, a city employee, hooks up holiday decorations Monday morning across the street from the Lyon County Courthouse in downtown Emporia. Workers spent most of Monday putting up downtown decorations.

With the Chase County Christmas celebration this weekend, it’s not too early to check out the Christmas festivities in the area.

Chase County will be filled with the sights, sounds and scents of an old-fashioned cowboy Christmas on Saturday. Several new activities are being introduced this year around the cowboy theme. Among the new activities are a cowboy-themed coloring contest; Little Miss Cowboy contest; Meet a Cowboy with local cowboy Bruce Brock demonstrating rope tricks and leather working; an ugly cowboy boot and hat contest; a Touch the Tack table where children can touch a saddle, bridle and brushes used in caring for a horse; and a Blessing of the Animals at 10:30 a.m. in Swope Park in Cottonwood Falls.

There also will be a Fabulous Fruitcake Toss at the Millstream Motel in Cottonwood Falls.

To start the weekend’s festivities, a dance will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Community Building in Cottonwood Falls.

On Saturday, Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive at 4:45 p.m. by carriage in downtown Cottonwood Falls. They will visit with children until 7 p.m. Santa will be followed by the annual lighting of the Chase County Courthouse at 7 p.m.

Upcoming Christmas celebrations include:

Melvern

The Melvern Community Pride will host the annual Christmas Lighting at 6 p.m. Saturday. Entertainment will be provided as well as cookies and hot chocolate.
