Lyon County Democrats and Republicans will hold presidential caucuses in February.
This is the first time since 1988 the Republican party in Lyon County has participated in a caucus.
The Democratic caucus will be on Feb. 5 at Best Western Inn, 3021 W. Highway 50. The Republican caucus will be Feb. 9 at the Anderson Building on the Lyon County Fairgrounds. The caucuses allows residents to participate in the selection of a party nominee.
“I look forward to meeting Republicans from across Lyon County and am excited about the chance to be a part of the selection of the Republican presidential nominee,” Republican County Chairman Chuck Hanna said.
According to the Kansas GOP, the state will have 64 caucuses in 61 counties. Other area counties coordinating Republican caucuses are Chase, Coffey, Greenwood, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee.
Lyon County Democrats Chairman Jerry Karr said Friday that the Democrat caucus is an open caucus.
“They don’t have to be listed as a registered Republican or Democrat,” Karr said. “They can come in as independents...”
Karr said the Democrats in the area consistently participate in caucuses.
“It’s really a grassroots effort and lots of activity and discussion among people who are interested,” Karr said.
