Gazette let her down

Thursday, November 15, 2007

I AM disappointed in your staff at the Emporia Gazette. On Oct. 20, we dedicated Charlie Brooks as Coach of the Year for bowling. We were told by your staff someone would be there to cover the dedication. Guess what? No one showed up! I would like to know why you tell someone they will have somebody there and no one came. It’s too bad that Emporia doesn’t have another newspaper in town, because I would be canceling my subscription to you and signing up with them.

Charlies Brooks has been a dedicated coach for bowling since 1960. Do you know how many weekends he spent with kids and helping them learn how to bowl? No, of course not. His health has not allowed him to get out on the lanes but he still shows up and coaches from a chair. The kids really love Charlie and listen to him because he shows respect and he gets just as excited as the children do when they accomplish what Charlie has told them to do. He gives children inspiration and never puts them down. He tells them to keep on trying and they will get the hang of throwing the ball. What’s really sad is that his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren attended this event. I know it’s a day that Charlie will remember.

Bowling is a sport just like ESU and Emporia High football, soccer, basketball and baseball. Bowling does not get the recognition that it deserves. It’s a sport in which no one has to sit on a bench. Everyone gets to participate and the children really enjoy it. Last year we had four young men on the Travel League who went to Manhattan and took first place and we could not get you to put a picture in the paper or do a small write-up on it. Too bad KVOE doesn’t do pictures because they did put it on the radio.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Gazette Sports Editor Michael Ashford asked the organizers to send a photo from the event, but none was provided. Also, information about the event was printed in the paper in the days preceding the event.

I agree with Vicki! Shame on you Emporia Gazette!
I also wish we had another local newspaper. Competition is always a great thing. Maybe Vicki I WILL cancell my subscription, if we tell them we would cancel it if there was another newspaper here in town,,,,,, well then they still win. they lost nothing! Maybe they need to get with the program!

It is a shame that the Gazette could not be bothered to cover the honoring of such a fine man, and a lifetime proponent of the sport of bowling.

He was my coach almost 40 years ago, and it is a thrill to see him still dedicated to the advancement of youth bowling. It is directly attributable to the influence of Charlie Brooks that so many of us have attained levels of excellence, garnered national awards, and reaped a lifetime of satisfaction from the sport.

Well done Coach Brooks, and may there be another generation of youth to receive the benefits of your great heart and sacrificial dedication.
