The MIAA’s volleyball freshman of the year once again is an Emporia State Hornet.
Ting Liu, a 6-foot-1 setter from Beijing, China, was unanimously chosen for the honor by the league coaches. She was second in the conference in assists and third in service aces.
ESU’s Arica Shepard earned the freshman of the year distinction last year.
Liu and Shepard were two of five Hornets who were honored on this year’s All-MIAA teams.
Shepard earned first-team distinction after finishing second in the conference with 4.62 kills per game.
Liu was placed on the league’s second team, while junior Megan Koster, sophomore Amy Byfield and freshman Brianne Boner all earned honorable mention.
Washburn’s Tessa Jones was the MIAA’s most valuable player, and WU’s Chris Herron was coach of the year.
ESU begins NCAA Tournament play on Thursday, taking on Pittsburg State in Kirksville, Mo.
