Emporia runners take 12th at Heartland cross country meet

The Class 5A State-champion Emporia High boys cross country team, competing with the Emporia Track Club, took 12th at the Heartland Region Nike Team Nationals cross country meet in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Saturday.
Emporia was led by the 25th-place finish of Jacob Davies, who ran the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 38 seconds.
Lance Sadler was the next ETC finisher in 49th with a time of 17 minutes. He was followed by Asher Delmott (52nd, 17:02), Mike Robinson (61st, 17:16), Andrew Wayman (75th, 17:28) Tyler Anliker (78th, 17:36) and Tavo Dikin (87th, 17:59).
The Heartland Region is comprised of teams from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. The top two teams won an all-expenses paid trip to Portland, Ore., for the Nike National Team Championships. The team made up of runners from Shawnee Mission Northwest, the Class 6A State champion, finished second.
ESU volleyball earns tournament invite
The 15th-ranked Emporia State volleyball team received a bid to the NCAA Tournament over the weekend, its second tournament appearance in three years.
The fourth-seeded Hornets will take on 18th-ranked and fifth-seeded Pittsburg State in the first round of the South Central Regional on Thursday in Kirksville, Mo. The start time has not been announced.
