An administrator at Emporia State University has been named one of three finalists for the job of president of Dalton State College in Dalton, Ga.
A representative of the search committee announced Thursday that John Schwenn, vice president for academic affairs at ESU, is one of the candidates being considered to replace President James A. Burran, who plans to retire Dec. 31.
Schwenn served as interim president of ESU for five months in 2006 after the departure of President Kay Schallenkamp and before the hiring of President Michael Lane. He was hired at ESU in 1989 as an associate professor and associate chair of the division of psychology and special education in The Teachers College. He was later appointed department chair, then associate vice president for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies and research. In his current job, Schwenn provides leadership to the university’s faculty.
This is not the first time Schwenn has been considered for the top job at a university. In April, he was a finalist for the presidency of the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Schwenn has doctoral and master of science degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. In 2005, that university presented him with its Distinguished Alumni Award.
A news release Thursday from the University System of Georgia said the Board of Regents expects to name the next president of Dalton State College at a future meeting.

I'd hate to lose him, but John Schwenn is probably due for a chance at the helm in his own right. Good luck, John.

I've known John and Judy for years. That man represents ESU well and was/is a wonderful ambassador for the community. Any university would be lucky to have him. Although part of me hopes that he will stick around, I know that he deserves this opportunity. Good luck John! We're all rooting for you!
