Building sprayed with gunfire

Four apartments were damaged in a drive-by shooting in Emporia Monday evening. There were no injuries.
Lt. John Koelsch of the Emporia Police Department reported that someone fired several shots into an apartment building at 1014 Sylvan St. Four of the apartments were damaged by the bullets.
“There were numerous persons in those apartments at that time,” Koelsch said. “No injuries occurred during the incident.”
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Emporia Police Department at 343-4200 or Lyon County Crime Stoppers at 342-CARE (2273). The Emporia police are continuing to investigate the incident.

houndi that would be nice but we can't take away the cops who sit outside of college parties trying to bust minors. WE can have drive by shootings in this town has long as we don't have 19 or 20 yr olds in college drinking beer. I'm sure everybody agrees with me on this.

We do not have Gangs or a drug problem here in Emporia !!!!!!!!!! This what the majority of people think !
The police cannot do it alone . 35 police officers cannot control over 30,000 people . that is impossible ! They are underpaid and under staff and we have some gang members from larger cities coming here to live and they will do anything to keep a strong hold on the drug game. The community has to get involved . Not just for your kids but for thier friends also and the kids in the community. There is a drug house by one of our elementary schools. There will always be drugs. The only way to decrease it is the decrease the demand. Educate our kids. I could tell you about 100 stories that could make your head spin..
Here is just one.
Mother came to me to ask for help in finding her daughter who was missing for over a week. I called around to one of my contacts and ask if they new this girl's name and they said yes . The informant told me that the girl was being pimpped out to pay her drug bill (Crack) and she owed a lot . I contacted the mom and gave her the address and she went to get her duaghter from the drug house. HERE IN EMPORIA . true story. She was 18 when this had Happen.
Story 2.
I worked at a local plant here in EMporia and one of my co-workers sold Weed. He got caught and was given probation.but what was crazy was the people I saw who came to buy weed from him.I lived 4 townhouses from him. People you would not belive if I told you their names. Drugs run deep here in Emporia !

drugs being sold within 1,000 ft of school means extra penalties in emporia , know of kids being pimped out? know of drug sales near schools? report it, anomously if you want at the lyon county tip line reports are what helps get the crime down

Emporia has had a problem with gangs for a long time. I know this first hand and I know many people with gang ties in emporia due to it being my home town and when I left 4 years ago it wasn't getting any better. You people that say we don't have gang activity then you are lieing to yourselves because when I choose the path of life I took back in 1996 their was gang activity their because I was hanging with them. Their is a lot of drugs I used to know of several drug houses close to where kids can get a hold on it and the police department is very much aware of this and they just don't have the staffing to get a hold of the problem. When we get a good drug detective they end up leaving and taking on a new title and they don't pass all the information on to others. Sometimes it is like they don't want to take people seriously when it comes to gangs or drugs on our emporia streets maybe we the community need to take a stand and do what we can.

The people in the community needs to stand up to fight against the Gangs and Drugs. The church people needs to stand up and fight. Going to church on sunday and nodding your head is not enough . . You are right angel , they know but htey need more informants and controlled buys. Without that more drugs sold more kids become addicted !!!! We vote for the same people each year and nothing gets better , only worse. and when election comes around then you see the
so called leaders in your face smiling and shaking hands !! We need someone to vote for that can creat some change, maybe Coach Slaymaker or Dr. Kendall Wright Mrs Dorsey or Pastor Morris of New Covenant Church !

I have Dr. Wright and hes a great doctor. So you should shut the he** up. I dont see you trying to help anyone. All you do is complain. Emporia police sit around and do nothing and when they get bored they pull people over and lie about there speed. We need to do something about this because it will only get worse. I remember a time when there were som break ins with some cars and all the police did was sit at village and talk for an hour and then leave and never did anything else after that.

How long did it take for the police to show up? I heard gunfire many nights in a row at my old residence, and it took the police a 1/2 hr to show up, and I called them as soon as I heard it. I do know what gun fire sounds like, up range and down range of it. Instead of hiring a counsultant to adivse us on how to make our city look, shouldnt we hire more police officers. Maybe the reason why it took them so long to show up is because they are so understaffed.

At one time PD was down something like 7-9 officers.Why? They can get better money and working environment somewhere else. Nobody wants to come work here in any public service. It took them 8 months to find people to fill those spots.

Late in the spring we had about a week and half of nightly gunfire in our neighborhood, in the Ninth and Neosho area. The response was in the same timeframe Reservist mentioned. Some of the shooting was even taking place during the day. The police told us it was competing groups from Tyson and told us to expect more in the days ahead.
Sooner or later this will spill over and innocent bystanders are going to get hurt.

They're competing for the low paying jobs at Tyson. It may not make sense, but when you're at the low rung of the economic ladder it seems like the thing to do.
From what the police told us it was Hispanics and Somalis, again in competition for the low paying jobs at Tyson.

It sounds like Tyson read "The Grapes of Wrath"- bring in twice the number of desperate workers needed and see who will work for the least. It makes me wonder when I look at job ads in Emporia and see "competitive salary".

It's pretty sad that almost EVERY blog on here comes down to blaming Somalies or hispanics. You blame them for drugs, crime, anything that goes wrong in this town. It's easy to blame others, alot easier than trying to find a solution. I guess anglos don't use drugs or commit crimes. Think about it when you go to your 50+ churches on Sunday and ask yourselves....would God do this? Practice what you preach, it is obvious that there is a lot of preaching going on in your town but few seem to be listening. Is there somewhere in your Bible that states only whites will be addmitted to Heaven? If not you better start getting along with people of color, I'm pretty sure God isn't going to kick them out of Heaven because of skin color. Make a difference, change the world by beginning with yourselves! Love thy neighbor...Peace.

I think almost everyone makes a good point however regarding law enforcement in this area the Emporia PD is understaffed and there are many officers who are burnt out due to a long list of issues. Remember also that this is not just an Emporia issue it is a Lyon County issue, where the heck is the Sheriff's Dept. Why don't the two departments work together to solve crime in this community. I don't mean a consolidiation but just work together. I've been told that the leaders of the Sheriif's Dept. are more worried about non law enforcement issues and ticket writing rather than community policing. there are so many wasted resources that could be better implemented to helping the community rather than sit idle.

Almost all of our daily report is filled with hispanics and somali names. If you are a home owner and tax payer in Lyon County I suggest you do your homework and read up, I am not saying that there are no "anglo" offenders (you could of just said white people, but I understand you're trying to "sound" intelligent or educated) but really all you sound is IGNORANT. I pay taxes and my children go to Lyon Co schools and it's not getting any better. How can the school tell my daughter she can't wear a shirt that said "jesus is my homeboy" but every hispanic in the school can have pictures of Saint's and it all be in Spanish and that's ok??? I am tired of being forced to conform to other cultures, if I wanted to do that, I would move to Mexico or Somalia don't you agree? Our crime rate has gone thru the roof since the influx of Hispanics and Somalians and if you don't agree maybe you should read our daily report again!!! You let me know when the next "anglo" is pulled over on I 35 with enough cocaine to feed an entire metropolitan area let alone Emporia!!! You just let me know when that happens, will you??? I personally am ready to move out of Emporia because it's just not safe anymore and someone maybe needs to start some vigilante sh**... I live within close proximity to an elementary school, after seeing some hispanic males at this school during the summer, same time having some other hispanic kids meet him and exchanging packages I called the police. About 30 min later they showed up, and guess what the individuals were gone by then (big surprpise) and I was told next time I saw them to call officer Dragonas as he is in the right department for this kind of issue. I just pray no one goes to shooting up my house cuz if I ever have a burgler, drive by, attempted rape , I think you get my picture. It will be like a michael douglas film "boy did you pick the wrong damn house". someone is leaving in a body bag and I can center mass guaranteed it isn't going to be me!!! I am not racist by any means but I do think there is a problem with the huge influx of immigrants in such a small area and something needs to be done!!!

I think these cops around here just need a little inspiration, like more money and a Dunkin' Donuts shop. I say WE ALL PICKET CITY HALL, ya, that'll show them. Remember all those forgotten and broken promises come election time people!! Vote those schmucks outta there. Let's get some cops with some guts and pay them for it. Get these high priced politicians outta the way, get some local, real hometown folks fill these offices. You don't need a college education to do it, why in fact, some of the most ignorant people I know have been in politics.
