Road closing extended

Bridge repairs are moving a little more slowly than anticipated on Road U between K-170 (Road 250) and Road 260, according to information from the county road department.

Road U is expected to remain closed until Nov. 16.

Birthday reception

Sally Holliman will be the guest of honor at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Grace United Methodist Church in celebration of her 80th birthday. She requests no gifts, but “cards will be appreciated.” Messages may be sent to 1325 Neosho St., Emporia, KS 66801.

Genealogy workshop

A free genealogy workshop, “From Kansas to Concord - Tracing your roots to the American Revolution era,” will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Emporia Public Library, 110 E. Sixth Ave. Peter Grassl, vice president of the Kansas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution will be the leader of the workshop. Topics covered will include where to start, where to find and how to use censuses, military pension records, area research facilities and other information. The SAR is a male lineage society whose members trace their ancestry to a person who participated in the Revolutionary War. ‘Celebrate Recovery’ begins program here

People who are encountering problems caused by death of a loved one, depression, eating disorders, divorce and other upheavals are eligible to attend a weekly gathering, “Celebrate Recovery,” that meets at 6 p.m. each Friday at the First Church of the Nazarene, 2931 W. 24th Ave.

Sonia Irwin is director of the group and her husband, Dennis, is training coach.

“Celebrate Recovery” is a nationwide program through the Saddleback Church in California, Dennis Irwin said. Those who attend may remain anonymous.

Meetings begin with a meal that costs $4 per person, with a worship time at 7 p.m. and classes or small group meetings at 8 p.m. Sessions end with dessert and coffee at 9 p.m.
