Art exhibit

The Emporia State University Art Department will present the annual exhibition of all current and emeritus ESU Art Department faculty, opening Monday and continuing through Dec. 4. The opening reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Artists from the faculty include Eric Conrad, John Hasegawa, James Ehlers, Roberta Eichenberg, Elaine Henry, Dan Kirchhefer, Robert Lundbloom, Patrick Martin, and Ann Piper. Woodwind concert

The ESU Department of Music will have Woodwind Showcase Concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Heath Recital Hall of Beach Music Hall on the ESU campus. Opera Theatre will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, also in Heath Recital Hall. On Nov. 15, the Jazz Ensemble Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in Albert Taylor Hall. The Madrigal Dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 and 17 at the Colonial Ballroom. Also, on Nov. 17, the Honors Band Concert will be at 4 p.m. in Albert Taylor Hall. Book discussion

“Virgin of Small Plains” by Nancy Pickard is the next book in the Kansas Connections: 2007 Book Discussion Series held at the Emporia Public Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The final book to be discussed will be “The Persian Pickle Club” by Sandra Dallas on Dec. 5. Multiple copies of the books are available for checkout. The library is holding this series in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Emporia by focusing on books with Kansas settings, or Kansas characters or written by Kansas authors. Greek classics

The ESU Theater presents Greek tragedy and comedy classic on a single bill, “The Trojan Women and Lysistrata” at 7:30 p.m. in the Frederickson Theatre on Nov. 14-17, 28-30 and Dec. 1. “The Woman in Black,” described as a “frightening English melodrama,” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the Karl C. Bruder Theatre Feb. 27-29 and March 1. Emeritus professor Ronald Q. Frederickson will return to direct “Nickel and Dimed” at 7:30 p.m. March 5-8 and 2 p.m. March 9 in the Frederickson Theatre. “Shakespeare in Hollywood,” a “hilarious period comedy by Ken Ludwing,” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. April 30 and May 1-3 in the Karl C. Gaelic concert

The Emporia Arts Council continues their 2007-2008 season with “Gaelic Storm,” Celtic music and dance, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 29. Gaelic Storm has produced six albums and appeared in the film, “Titanic.” For tickets and/or more information, call 343-6473 or fax: 620-340-6475.

Symphony on radio

The Wichita Symphony announced in a press release that Radio Kansas (90.1 in the Emporia area) will broadcast each of the programs in Orchestra’s 2007-2008 Classics Series. These broadcasts will be aired on a delayed basis, beginning at 7 p.m. Jan. 11. All broadcasts will be aired at 7 p.m. on Fridays. The aired concerts will include additional commentary, such as interviews with Maestro Sewell. The host will be Mark Simmons, Radio Kansas’ music director.

The schedule is: Jan. 11 — Kyoko Takezawa, violin; Jan. 18 — Lilya Zilberstein, piano; Jan. 25 — A Sea Symphony/Mozart’s Symphony No. 39; Feb. 1- Caitlin Tully, violin; April 4 -Popular Classics, Sylvia McNair, vocalist; April 11 — Stewart Goodyear, piano; April 18 — Nicholas Smith, French horn; April 25 — Ingrid Fliter, piano.
