I Felt compelled to write this letter to the Emporia Gazette in order to recognize one of the more inspirational athletic events I have ever witnessed. Last Friday night, the Emporia High School football team had what seemed to be an impossible task, which was to beat one of the best teams in the state of Kansas (previously unbeaten this season), on their home field in order to advance to the State play-offs.
It wasn’t that Emporia won the game; it was how Emporia won the game. The Spartans kept coming back from huge deficits, refusing to quit when most would have given up completely. Thanks gentlemen, for reminding us what the words “character” and “determination” mean.
Who knows what the State playoffs will bring, but to the football players and coaching staff, understand that your fans, parents and community already feel you’re winners and are extremely proud of you.
