Lyon County commissioners on Wednesday accepted new flood maps from zoning and floodplain manager Samuel Seeley during their action meeting Wednesday.
Seeley said the new flood maps are necessary as part of the National Flood Insurance Program. The last revisions done were in 1987. The new maps have been in the works two years.
The revisions reflect the protection of Hartford’s levee, which has received provisional certification. Before that certification, federal maps showed that half the town would be underwater in the event of a major floor. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in the process of fully certifying the levee.
Also Thursday, Rick Frevert of Lyon County Emergency Management asked commissioners to accept the county’s mitigation plan, which was started last December. The mitigation plan has been accepted by the state and federal government, Frevert said. Commissioners accepted the plan Wednesday, which will allow Lyon County to receive disaster aid. The plan is set up into six sections and will be reviewed once a year, Frevert told commissioners.
