Municipal band concert

The Emporia Municipal Band will give its weekly free concert at 8 p.m. Thursday at Fremont Park, Fourth Avenue and Union Street. The theme for this week’s concert is “An All-American Concert.”

The program is:

• “Declaration Overture,” by Claude T. Smith

• Theme from “New York, New York,” by John Kander, arranged by Frank Cofield

• “Novena,” by James Swearingen

Time to renew E-G plates

Thursday is the last day to renew vehicle registrations without a penalty for people whose last names begin with letters E, F or G. Proof of insurance is required.

The Motor Vehicle Department office hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Program by soldier back from Iraq

The Santa Fe Trail Republican Women of North Lyon County meet at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Allen Senior Center.

The program will be presented by 1st Lt. Cory Cannon and his wife, Melissa Cannon. Lt. Cannon, who recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq, will talk about his experiences during Operation Iraqi Freedom and also will give a slide presentation.

He was a platoon leader in the 309th Transportation Company and now is serving as commander of the 541st Port Management Team in Manhattan. Melissa Cannon will talk about dealing with “home front issues” and her husband being deployed.

Driver safety class

The AARP Driver Safety Class will be held Saturday at 618 Commercial St. This is an eight-hour class.

Think and be active

The Girl Scouts will hold workshops, “Media-Smart Youth: Eat, Think and Be Active!” for all girls from 11 to 13 years from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday in June at the Amend Girl Scout Center, 1200 Burlingame Road.

The workshops are intended to help girls “make healthful choices about nutrition and physical activity and understand how media can influence their lives,” according to a Scout news release.
