The Emporia Energy U-18 softball team went 1-2 at a tournament in Council Grove on Monday in its first action of the summer season.
In the first game, the Energy lost, 2-1, to the Kansas Freedom, a team out of Wichita, in extra innings.
With a scoreless game heading into the first tiebreaker inning, Emporia struck in the first extra frame, as a sacrifice fly from McKenzie Cinelli moved Andrea McAfee to third, and then McAfee scored on a single by Brendy Muninger, Emporia’s only hit of the game.
However, the Energy’s lead was short-lived, as the Freedom managed to tie the score at 1 in the bottom of the frame.
After Empoiria was held scoreless in the second inning of the tiebreaker, the Kansas Freedom plated the winning run on a wild pitch from Amber Jones.
Jones took the loss on the mound, allowing two runs on two hits.
In the second game, the Energy defeated the Paola T-Birds, 9-2.
Amy McAfee picked up the win, allowing just two runs on three hits.
Emporia scored two runs in the first after a Cinelli walk and a Casey Speer single put two on for Amy McAfee, who lined a hard hit ball to the short stop. The short stop could not handle it, which allowed Cinelli and Speer to score.
Emporia put the game out of reach in the third when it scored seven runs on four walks and got hits from Muninger, Speer and Elyse Hecht.
In the final game of the tournament, Emporia fell to the Abilene Power, 5-2.
Amber Jones again took the loss after she allowed five runs, none of which were earned thanks to five Energy errors. Jones only allowed two hits in the game.
Emporia was held scoreless until the third inning. Andrea McAfee and Cinelli reached on back-to-back walks, and McAfee scored on a wild pitch. Cinelli then came across on a grounder by Muninger.
Emporia will next play host to a tournament at the Trusler Sports Complex this weekend.
