WICHITA -- Led by the dominating performances of Emporia High's Layne Moore and Burlington's Katie Guevel, the area picked up nine State titles on the second day of the State track and field championships on Saturday.
The story of the day was Guevel, who won four individual titles for the second year in a row while also setting three new State records.
Guevel won Class 3A titles in the 100-meter dash (12.33 seconds), the 200-meter dash (24.95), the 100-meter hurdles (14.18, State record) and the 300-meter hurdles (43.76, State record). Guevel's 100 preliminary time of 12.11 seconds earlier in the day also set the State record.
For Emporia, it was Moore who led the way, as the Missouri signee won the Class 5A 400-meter dash in a school-record time of 55.97 seconds, which is the 12th fastest 400 time in Kansas high school history in all classes and just .07 seconds off the State meet record. Moore then won the 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 19.41 seconds.
It is the second year in a row that Moore has won both the Class 5A 400 and 800 titles.
But Moore wasn't finished. The senior ran the anchor leg on the Emporia High girls' 4x400-meter relay squad with Heather Coe, Angela Finch and Lindy Arndt and overcame a sizable deficit to bring the EHS girls the State title with a time of 4:00.22.
Jacob Davies made it a clean sweep for Emporia High in the Class 5A 800, winning the boys championship in a time of 1:55.54 after erasing a nearly 20-meter deficit with less than 300 meters to go.
The other area title on the day went to Waverly's Matt Coursen. The Emporia State football signee took the Class 1A boys title in 40.05 seconds.
In the team standings, the Emporia boys finished second and the Emporia girls finished fourth.
