Summer theater

tryouts soon

The Community Theatre of Emporia is holding auditions for this year’s Mid Summer Fair, which features both a children’s play and an adult production of scenes from the works of William Shakespeare.

Tryouts will begin at 1 p.m. June 3, 6:45 p.m. June 7 and 6 p.m. June 8., all at the Lee Beran Recreation Center’s social hall, 313 W. Fourth Ave. The adult production will include scenes from “The Taming of the Shrew” but may perform others as well, depending on the final cast.

Performances will be in the Peter Pan Park amphitheater. In the event of rain or excessive heat, performances will move to Rollers.

The Mid Summer Fair will be Aug. 6 through 11. The fair is free and includes several activities for children such as chalk drawing and ribbon dancing. And this year, the theater company has teamed up with the Greater Emporia Barbecue Festival, allowing an even wider scope of activities than before.

‘High School Musical’

Sondra Burden’s Studio of Fine Arts will present its summer musical, “High School Musical,” at 7 p.m. May 30 at the Emporia Arts Council. The studio will also perform selections from “Aida.”

Emporia artists at Smoky Hill

Emporia painter Terry Maxwell and Emporia glass artists Cecil and Lisa McKenzie will be among the 150 artists showing their works at the Smoky Hill River Festival June 7 through June 10 in Salina. For more information and a complete list of activities, see the festival’s Web site at www.riverfestival.com/2007. Information can also be had by calling (785) 309-5770.

‘Red Horse’ next for readers

“Behold a Red Horse” by Cotton Smith will be the book discussed at 7 p.m. June 6 at the Emporia Public Library “Kansas Connections” 2007 book discussion series.

Quilt show June 9-10

The Flint Hills Regional Quilt Guild annual quilt show will be held at 10 a.m. June 9 and 10 at the Lee Beran Recreation Center. Because it is Emporia’s 150th anniversary, the quilters will focus on heirloom and traditional quilts, needlework from the past, christening dresses, wedding gowns, crocheted tablecloths and other items.

Frontier festival

June 8-10

The Frontier Western Celebration in El Dorado will be held June 8 through June 10. At 7 p.m. June 8, the band “BomShel” will perform in an outdoor arena at the YMCA. Saturday begins with a chuckwagon breakfast at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by many activities during the day. At 7 p.m. Saturday, The Extreme Bull Blowout bullriding contest will begin at the El Dorado Civic Center outdoor arena. Prize money will be awarded, along with a classic belt buckle. The day ends with an outdoor dance.

On Sunday, a cowboy church service will begin at 10 a.m. in the arena. At 2 p.m. Sunday, an outdoor trail ride begins at Lake El Dorado.

A $4 festival button will admit guests to all activities except the bullriding, which is $8 for adults and $4 for children 5-12. Children younger than 5 are admitted free. For more information, call ((316) 321-3088 or chairman Jean Plummer at (316) 321-3502.
