Queen candidate
Keshia Harris of Emporia has been selected from St. James Missionary Baptist Church and the Smoky Hill District as the district’s Rose Queen candidate at the Kansas State Baptist Convention in June. She is the daughter of Carolyn Powell of Emporia.
A benefit variety show will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Manhattan. Harris will perform an interpretative dance. All proceeds from the show will benefit her candidacy.
Harris is a sophomore at Emporia High School and president of the Black Student Organization. She is a member of the track and field team and a former member of the debate team. At St. James, Harris is a member of the Praise Team, secretary-treasurer of the Sunday school, a junior usher and the secretary of the Youth Department. She also is an officer in the Youth Department of the Missionary Baptist State Convention.
