Pargman wins title; Olpe Boys take 3rd

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

Olpe’s Jordan Pargman won the individual title Monday at the Class 1A State golf tournament at the Hesston Golf Park in Hesston.

Pargman fired off a 7-over 78 to finish tied with Hutchinson Central Christian’s Trent Stutzman, and Pargman won a playoff to take the individual title.

Pargman led the way for Olpe, which finished in a three-way tie for the lowest team score with Quivira Heights and Pretty Prairie by carding a 386.

The team title went to Quivira Heights, as its fifth finisher carded a 92 to break the tie. Pretty Prairie finished second, as its fifth score was a 95, while Olpe came in third, as Michael Schmidt carded a 110 as the fifth finisher.

“The way we finished was kind of bittersweet, just wishing we could have dropped one stroke somewhere,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “When all is said and done, though, I’m proud of the kids and what they’ve done. It’s nice to finish on a note like that.”

Tanner Coble finished fourth after carding a 9-over 80 and Seth Pargman finished with an 86 to place 13th to round out the Olpe medalists, while Dallas Burenheide finished with a 102, Schmidt carded a 110 and Jacob Kehres shot a 124.

“I’m proud of them,” coach Schmidt said. “We did not have the smoothest spring with the weather, but we finished up the year pretty good.”

One item of interest, the Greensburg golf team — less than 2 1/2 weeks after the town of Greensburg was destroyed by a tornado — finished ninth, with Andrew Seiler and Alex Reinecke each shooting an 87 to tie finish in a four-way tie for 14th individually. The team’s equipment had been donated by various outlets across the state.

In the 2A tournament in Emporia, Hartford’s Tommy Smith finished in a tie for 20th with a score of 87.

Smith competed on the Southern Lyon County team with Olpe’s golfers all season before having to split up for the State tournament.

“He has some good things to look forward to as a sophomore,” coach Schmidt said. “I’m proud of how he did.”
